Lost Castle / 失落城堡

Lost Castle / 失落城堡

this is only the second review i have ever wrote for a game and its my first good one. i just felt like i needed to take the time to make a solid shout out to the creators of this game. i bought this game a couple years ago for $10 USD. becuase i was looking for something to waste time for a day or two and it was so cheap. now granted i have been a gamer for over 30 years im an old gamer and i would say im not the best but im a 8/10 and enjoy hard games both pve and pvp . now about lost castle, this game is just great.

All right, I’ve played this game long enough to review it, and I’ve to say it has gone above expectations for an old school hack’n’slash where rng changes the playstyle in every game. Drawings and artwork is relatively simple but detailed, offering a good presentation, particularly bosses in their intros (it’s boring in the long run but they aren’t long or tedious and they can be skipped).

Pros:

-Game is fairly optimized, loading quickly and fps doesn’t drop even with a big number of enemies on screen even in old laptops.

Star Escape

Star Escape

Really fun, simple competitive game. I’ve played alone and with a friend and I could see this being incredibly fun with 3-4 people. It’s not easy but not unfair, you always know what you did wrong. The only complaint i would have is initially navigating the menu to start a game was a little confusing.

Great game! I used to have this on the Xbox so was pretty chuffed to play it again here. This is my first purchase on Steam too and so far im pretty impressed with how it works. Stick Em Up 2 is a primarily a platformer but there’s actually quite a lot of variation to the gameplay, you get a different weapon on each level and they really dictate the way you have to play the game.

The first level opens with a quick tutorial and a few basic jumps to get you used to the controls and then its straight into the action. The controls took a minute to get used to (Im playing on my keyboard and mouse) but I soon found myself galloping along and unleashing a sea of bullets on the unsuspecting stick-baddies. The weapon you start with is a machine gun with unlimited ammo, which is pretty handy. Half way through you get to fly a helicopter with a rocket launcher which is obviously extremely badass. The second stage is set in Japan and the soundtrack is really cool, ancient Japanesey music. The weapon here is a ninja star and you have to change your tactics a little bit, if you try and rush through like you did in the first level you’ll be massacred in no tiime. The trick I found was to progress slowly and pick the enemies off one by one like a ninja. Theres a massive house at the end of this stage which looks like something out of a 70s Kung Fu flick and you need to scale your way right to the very top to get off the level.

I’m just going to start off by saying I have nothing but praise for this game. With that said I know most STEAM users are going to look at the price point for this and think, “They’ve GOT to be out of their minds!” No they aren’t This game is packed with so much content that I don’t think there’s a single game of its kind that can topple. I’ll even say that you couldn’t even combine 3 or 4 games together to get the amount of content that this game has to offer fans of the genre.

Aesthetically this game brings a simple and clean presentation to the table. The UI for ship combat is clean and simple to understand without too much info bombarding the player while they are struggling to keep their ship from a fiery demise. The 3D models are low in the polygon department, yet beautifully designed. Everything from simple cannon fodder enemies to the enormous bosses look great.

Shmups have always been a part of my gaming career. I was never good at them like all the experts going for high scores and 1CC runs, but I always tried to prove my worth regardless. I also always looked at shmups as a ‘David vs. Goliath’ scenario; a small, one man fighter versus entire fleets and empires. And what better game to start my shmup career on Steam than Dariusburst Chronicle Saviors? Part of Taito’s Darius series and home console / PC version of Dariusburst, there’s a lot of content to go around in this game. After clocking close to 72 hours of play, is the game worth the price tag and separate DLC? Let’s find out.

Star Boy

Star Boy

The evil sorceress Refinnej has sent her minions to infest space and time. There is only one team that can stop her and that’s Starboy and the Star Warriors “Que Theme song” (to be honest with you, I still don’t know what this game is about, so I used some of the description on the storepage).

Graphics

I’ve seen these type of graphics before (Nepenthe, Not COD, Hero Boy, and Escape Doodleland), but when it comes to starboy, it doesn’t give me that awesome feeling i have for hand-drawn games. The playable characters and the levels lack interest and appeal, but some of the enemies are actually well drawn, the game feels like it was tacked on and rushed. The developer told me that it took 2 years in making this game frame by frame, honestly, I’ve seen 5-year-olds do better than this game….”GunMan Taco Truck”.

1993 Space Machine

1993 Space Machine

I confess I purchased this mainly for the nostalgia factor. After completing 1993:SM I can say the tagline “celebrating games like Gradius, R-Type and Life Force” is realistic but tends to underestimate some bullet hell elements that are present in game.

Bullet hell did indeed surface in year 1993 but was not a popular subgenre until the second half of the decade. What we have here, to summarize, is a mostly classic horizontal shooter, with occasional incursions in bullet hell territory - especially in some overcrowded passages where complex bullet geometries and bullet wave patterns tend to show up, challenging you to not only shoot but dodge, too. I’d say the classic/BH ratio is 80/20, but your mileage may vary.

1993 Space Machine is short, simple but very fun 2D side scrolling Shoot Em’ Up. The game is easy to pick up and play - You guide your space ship through five stages in your mission to defeat the final boss.

That is not to say the game itself is easy. Stages rapidly increase in difficulty and you will soon find yourself fending off multiple enemies and stage hazards. There are two classes of ships to choose from - A small, nimble but weaker ship or a slower ship that can tank more damage and carry more weapons. Personally I prefered the former, they were just generally better at avoiding enemy projectiles and stage hazards. I would recommend trying both types of ships and seeing which you prefer.

Stardust Galaxy Warriors: Stellar Climax

Stardust Galaxy Warriors: Stellar Climax

I’ve had half of an eye on Stardust Galaxy Warriors since it hit Steam Greenlight. I bought it, and my impression of it then was that it was an alright introduction to shmups. I’d hoped to get some of my friends into shmups by playing this with them, but due to my IRL friends being non-gamers, this didn’t pan out. I’ve attempted to get myself through some of the achievements every now and then, so I’ve put an hour into this game “here and there,” and then I put the game down again because I wanted to play something else - I must admit that this game was not made for someone like me. Yet somehow, I keep finding myself playing this game alone, and every time I pick it up I am not disappointed. This game has, so far, been the highlight of my quest through my backlog.

To start off, I highly recommend anyone that enjoys side scrolling shooters to purchase this game, it is a must have. Feel free to keep reading if you want to know my reason.

I’m not a hardcore fan of shoot-em-ups, I didn’t even know what the word “shump” meant until today, but what I do know is that this game is really fun.

The game is very easy to pick up and play, the controls and mechanics are simple and none of that convoluted stuff, which I feel is a great thing. I don’t want to spend an hour learning about wierd game mechanics when all I want to do is just destroy enemies.

Fist Puncher

Fist Puncher

One of my favorite beat ‘em up indie choices. It sure brings back that brawler old school fun like Streets of Rage, Double Dragon nostalgia.

Game gives a variety of character and in-game collectibles, you get to level characters through and assign skills to them unlocking special moves - that was somewhat of a pleasant surprise for a brawler, it adds a bit to the experience depending on which one you choose. When it comes to gameplay, not much else outside of kicking and punching; special moves are tailored to character design, it’s all related to humor rather than skills. I love the retro-style graphics, love the variety of challenge styles (some are timed areas, some are on top of cars and whatnot), and the one thing I enjoyed the most was the humor. The nudist beach was certainly unexpected, yet hilarious.

The Little Brawler That Could (but probably shouldn’t have)

My girlfriend and I liked this game at first: there were unlocks, some of the humor worked, and the light rpg elements and combat were functional. We love Double Dragon, River City Ransom, Golden Axe, TMNT, Streets of Rage etc., so this seemed like a sure bet at the time.

After a while we decide we like it, and want to show our friends. But we can’t include our friends because that would mean grinding up their characters to our level so we could play (levels are attached to the 4 players, not to the characters themselves). So now we have to leave our friends out and just play by ourselves, but its no big deal. Now combat is starting to get stale and nothing is really jumping out at us. Then we decide we want to be daring and maybe try out one of the many new characters we unlocked, but oh bummer, they start at level 0 and would take hours to grind. Now we are trapped, just the two of us, playing a game where we aren’t really free to use the characters we unlock with out going through the monotony of grinding. We went through level after level, unlocking all kinds of cards (achievments), characters, and secret items/areas, but really all we wanted to do was have fun. Packing in all this content doesn’t really matter unless the game offers some kind of entertainment.

Guns, Gore and Cannoli 2

Guns, Gore and Cannoli 2

I bought this randomly on my switch several months back, it just looked cool. But my god this game is insane, made with tons of care and passion. It’s a unique experience compared to any other game like it. To me this game is worth full price, but if you are still not sold, if you can pick this up on sale then it’s absolutely 100% worth the price.

If you’re like my friends and I and like to squeeze out every glitch or trick you can out of a game, this is for you. Or, if you just crave some simple dumb fun alone or with friends, then this is the game for you. The devs have put so much care and effort into every little detail and it really shows; every part of the game is the good part of the game.

Guns, Gore and Cannoli 2 is set 15 years later after the first game in 1944. WWII has already started and Vinnie Cannoli is back to take out anyone in his way. The story starts with you captured by the mob looking to get some revenge, but you escape and start your rampage.

There is a lot to like in Guns, Gore and Cannoli 2, from the bizarrely sadistic characters to the impressive variety in enemy design. The controls are easy to get use too. Double jumping, kicking, jump kicks, action rolling and 360 aiming.
