Friday Night Bullet Arena

Friday Night Bullet Arena

LOVE IT! Played with 3 good friends in a 4 player local vs game. The most fun I’ve had with my friends in a new game in a long time.

Fast paced and quick thinking, every round ended with cheers and laughter as we found new ways to outsmart eachother.

Never a dull moment with friends in this game.

Endless hours of fun!

Heavy Burger

Heavy Burger

If you like twinstick shooters, retro arcade games, and local 2v2 multiplayer games, Heavy Burger is a keeper.

[Watch: Video Gameplay]

Pros

  • Pixel perfect recreation of arcade classics

  • Simple, intuitive, and responsive controls

  • 2v2, 4P Controller support, great party game

  • Allows customized gauntlets of your favorite maps

  • Fairly challenging achievements for hunters

Cons

  • No online multiplayer. But it does have bot support for solo play

Real player with 22.4 hrs in game

Coming out of nowhere with no marketing that I’m aware of, Heavy Burger is a four-player local competitive game that takes the bullet-dumping dodge-rolling twin stick shooter antics of Enter The Gungeon with the endzone-driving pressure of Nidhogg and wraps it all in a celebratory orgy of Data East’s 80s arcade catalog, creating a wonderfully chaotic game that perfectly targets a demographic of around zero people.

Up to four Peter Peppers (human-controlled or bots) split into two teams and, armed with automatic burger launchers, scramble to grab a bag of money dropped in the center of the map. The team that takes possession attempts to run the money to the opposite side of the screen while their opponents try to gun them down with shotguns, miniguns, lasers, and other randomly spawned weapons in order to take the bag for themselves. Once someone manages to cross the endzone, the map is “cleared” for that team, and they move onto the next stage that’s based on one of five Data East arcade games, each with their own gimmicks: Side Pocket’s pool table full of balls that can be shot at opponents; Karate Champ’s arena that fills with, well, karate champs trying to punch and sweep our culinary heroes; Heavy Gunner’s cliffside fortress full of turrets and trigger-happy soldiers; Lock and Chase’s randomly-generated maze that fills with policemen; and of course, Pepper’s own Burger Time, complete with falling patties and toppings along with evil eggs and sausages harrassing the players.

River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~

River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~

This game (originally released for the PlayStation 3) is a remake of Downtown Nekketsu Kōshinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundōkai, a hilarious and extremely popular Famicom game that is part of the Kunio-kun series. The game was also ported to the Game Boy and had a 3D re-imagining on the Nintendo DS. Though this remake doesn’t include some of the additions from those ports, the game makes up for it with a whole lot of substance: more teams, more characters, more techniques, character creation, team creation, stage creation, a robust single player mode and online play. The game has plenty of fan service for fans and players of previous Kunio-kun games.

A little history on this game for those that didn’t know or were too lazy to look up what this game is and was.

So first off: this game is a remake. This game is a revisioned version of what was orginally called in Japan: “Downtown - Nekketsu Koushin Kyoku Soreyuke Daiundokai” that’s originally from the NES. Like, this is a DIRECT remake. Almost everything is the same except it’s more expanded in terms of story, gameplay, and presentation. So this english name we got for the game is actually a reused name from a Nintendo DS title. Same function, a remake of the above, but overhauled most of the game. The DS title mentioned above is the first time America got its hands on it. The NES version has NEVER gotten a American release. So color me suprised that Arc systems did this again (as they were ones who did the DS version)

Super Rock Blasters!

Super Rock Blasters!

I first played Spuer Rock Blasters! at Magfest with one of my freinds and we could not put it down. The game may not be super complex or anything, but god damn it is so much fun to play. The controls are smooth, the mechanics well develpoed, and the gameplay is fantastic. I highly recomend this game to anyone with a few freinds who wants to kick back and have a whole lot of fun

Astro Duel

Astro Duel

Astro Duel is a game that sneaks up on ya. It looks like Asteroids and Samurai Gun had a baby… but it turns out that the baby is actually like a Baby Rambo with twin uzis and insane kung fu skills and also a tail! That’s how awesome this game is. I’m so stoked it’s finally on Steam, cause now I can play it on my big screen and punk all my bois and baes with my insane astro dueling skills. If you’re hard up for a game that will make you laugh, cry, scream, and probably get a whole pizza dumped on your head, then this is the game for you.

This is one of the best shared-screen 4-player games I’ve played.

One of those games that makes you burst out laughing or burst into obscenities. Or both. Mostly both.

It’s kind of like a love child between Asteroids and Towerfall Ascension. It has far more options than Astroids. It has far less options than Towerfall Ascension.

Some random things that some fellow multiplayer retro-gamers might be interested to know:

  • 2 to 4 players, local shared screen, small arena, top down 2D space shooter.

Castle Chaos

Castle Chaos

One of the best local co-op games on Steam and solid re-make of Rampart that allows for all combinations of human and computer players. I am looking forward to seeing what additions the makers add over the coming months. At this point the game is a bit expensive for the full price of $8 (so I nabbed it on sale), but maybe down the road maybe that opinion will change.

Aside from online play and some of the other interesting potential additions to the game, an option to have the singular hanging castle pieces and lone pieces removed after each round would be nice. I recall the arcade Rampart did this.

Update Note: This game has been abandoned with no posts, explanations, or updates from the Devs for well over a year. Only purchase if you think it’s really worth it in it’s current state.

I have had Castle Chaos for about a year now and have only played it for about 2 hours. On my scale, one should get much more playtime than 2 hours from an $8 game. If it were $1-$3, I might recommend it, but at the base of $8, it’s not worth it.

The concept itself is okay, and the game looks well made and smooth. Achievements are nice and set some goals to accomplish. It does only have partial controller support, which is unfortunate, because it seems easy enough to add full support. Currently you can only aim/attack/rotate with a controller, not use any menu options, settings, start the game, etc.

Archon Classic

Archon Classic

For those of you who grew up playing the original Archon, you will be glad to know this one exists. It has everything the old game did, and offers a lot of improvements. The major thing being secondary attacks. Those were first introduced in Archon Ultra, and these are somewhat similar. There is also the ability to play on different maps some are dependant upon the number of players. ( You can have 4! :D) There is the classic Archon map, maps that allow your guys to level up to level 3, and maps that have runes that provide benefits when you move onto them.

Real player with 28.5 hrs in game

Archon Classic is a game made by Archon fans for Archon fans to enjoy. I played the NES version and Archon Ultra for MS-DOS, always thinking: “This is a nice game, but imagine how cool would it be if…”. No matter how that sentence finishes, Archon Classic will bring it alongside nostalgia and a modern touch.

This is a chess-like game where pieces of Light and Dark fight each other in real-time battles. Of course, most of the game’s strategy is on the board, where the turn-based portion takes place. If you’re a regular chess player, you’ll probably start thinking about openings, forks, movement block, waste of time, zugzwang and other well-known elements of chess.
