Cashtronauts

Cashtronauts

A compulsive twin stick asteroid-mining rogue-like set in procedurally generated space with a brilliant “risk” system where at the start of the game, you can choose to enable any or all of 10 different scenarios to make the game more difficult in return for a higher percentage of profit.

One risk makes your armour weak so only one hit can be taken. Another adds gold to some asteroids but also adds competition in the form of big mining ships.

The game eases you in gently, the 10 risks are unlocked as you play, letting you add more challenge as you get more confident.

TLDR: Twinstick instance based freelancer. Fun but beatable in one sitting. Needs patching but dev abandonned due to contract with a new studio. Limited content. Grindy.

This is a one small map containing a few central hotspots. A police station spawning police cars, a fuel and ammo station and a mining station to sell ore. You go out and find cash lying around, get ore, and kill pirates to sell bounty items at the police station. You die respawn and as you unlock more things the world gets more populated.

Fun game. Starts simple then becomes faster and more frantic as you progress. The developer is good people and it is great to support indie developers. Overall have enjoyed so far.

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron’s Workshop

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron’s Workshop

Game is awesome,

at first it seems to be too easy, but the focus here lies clearly on score-hunting, there are enough incentives to reward the player properly for high scores. Is the score high enoug you become rated with stars, depending on the rating you unlock achievments, music and editor parts.

This also means that playing the game just normally, won’t satisfy the urge for challenge, that’s important to notice, if you die merely your score resets and the progress in the current room, which isn’t much. If you die three times in a row on the same room you can make yourself invincible, which is a bit too much in my opinion, but at the same time, it’s just there for completing the short main campaign, after you’ve been through it, there is a much harder campaign which is hard enough that it might be even interesting to play if you not play for scores, in these levels the invincibility option is turned off. It took me some time and was pretty hard, but earning thhree stars in the hard versions is highly satisfying.

I’d like to applaud Taito for standing behind their product and fixing the major bugs the game had that originally prevented me from recommending this title… but it’s still not perfect for the current price point. While it no longer has any game breaking issues, the main Story levels still lack the visual charm of the original Bubble Bobble (which thankfully works great now and is also included via the “Arcade of Memories”) in regards to enemy designs and block skins; proving that new doesn’t always equal better.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil

When i think back to my childhood, My mind instantly goes back to what i consider to be my nostalgia days.

Games like DOOM, Timesplitters Duke Nukem, basically raised me as a young lad.

But if theres a game that i have a raging hard on for other than Doom, its Turok 2 Seeds Of Evil a game that for the longest time was nearly impossible for me to get my hands on.

After legally obtaining it and totally not torrenting it, the original pc port was finally mine and it was time to experience one of the games i grew up with as an adult.

When I played Turok: Dinosaur Hunter a few years ago I was impressed with Night Dive Studios’ ability to remaster classics from the past. The remastered game inspired me to buy Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. I didn’t play either game when they were released in the 1990s, so I wanted to experience both games. When I saw screenshots and videos of Turok 2 from 1998 I thought that the graphics were too blocky, and the lighting was murky. I can say that the remastered Turok 2 significantly improves on the graphics and the gameplay is quite intense.

Evolution Board Game

Evolution Board Game

UPDATE I no longer work for Northstar. This review should be considered to be for the first year of the game.

So up front… I worked on this game. I want to be super clear about that. (In case you can’t tell by me having more hours logged in it than it’s been out in the wild.

So why review. Well obviously I want the game I worked on to do well… but there is more than that.

For those who don’t know, Evolution was a table top board game first and has been for years. It was one of my earliest modern board gaming experiences and I still love to break it out and play it. The constant evolution of strategies and plays with the traits that can be played makes the game very replayable.

I’m definitely addicted to this one. Good game balance, I never feel like any build is just too powerful. Challenging AI. Cute/Beautiful art. Fun facts. Satisfying sound effects; glad I can turn the music off without turning them off (though the music is good to).

I assume you could unlock brutal mode right away but playing through the campaign on both difficulties has been both an enjoyable difficulty progression and given me plenty of content to consume. Especially with the fun of trying to unlock sketches. But Darwin gets super annoying on the second go through.
