The Last Archwing

The Last Archwing

The last Archwing reminded me of the traditional plane/helicopter shooting games I used to play in the pizza parlor as a kid. The more up to date graphics and controls were nice and enjoyed the variety of funny characters. My 5 year old son was able to beat the game on casual and enjoyed the humor as well.

Real player with 37.0 hrs in game

The Last Archwing nails game balance. It’s frustrating enough to keep you interested, but not in a way that’s discouraging. The variety of enemies is just right. The pacing is on par with the best of 2D side scrolling and vertical scrolling games. It’s nostalgic in a way that brings back the classic game feel, but because of the story, music, graphics (specifically lighting) and voice acting, the game is firmly placed into the modern era of games. A shout out to the barrel roll game mechanic for being easy to use but hard to master. Smashing multiple enemies with one roll is immensely satisfying. Deciding between using barrel roll and Death Wave adds a layer of depth that is compelling. The music choice for the different levels and opening sequence is superb. I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I am enjoying this game.

Giana Sisters: Dream Runners

Giana Sisters: Dream Runners

Funny game with good graphic and music. I played with my daughter for about 2 hours, and it was amazing. I can recommend this game.

sadly i can’t recommend this. it felt like a game that needed major polish. Yes its very similar to speedrunners. the artwork was fine. it just felt clunky/lagging a bit and even felt the controls weren’t really reacting when you used them. if the devs actually focused on it then it could be a decent game. also you’re limited on characters. there isn’t many to choose from at the start. you can’t even switch to one of the other sisters unless someone takes first place at the beginning of playing it.

Slap City

Slap City

This game is honestly a 10/10 platform fighter, as it has such stellar movement mechanics, while being very accessible to all level of players. I still laugh at this game even after well over a thousand hours of taking it seriously. It’s a gem…but the game isn’t the reason for the negative review.

The community for this game is slowly killing it. If you plan on competing, or getting help, or even finding matches on the Discord server, you’re going to need very thick skin. The community does have legitimately good people in it, but most of them stay quiet. The majority of the server is just crap posts and hate.

If you’re into smash games I couldn’t recommend this game enough. It’s got all the mechanics that competitive melee players use with the addition of more, the biggest of which is “Clutch” which allows for some crazy moments. An instance of this would be when you almost die and have a lot of momentum from the hit, you can use a clutch move, which reversed your momentum, to send yourself flying super fast back onto the stage. Another fun example is with the Goddess of Explosions who is able to utilize Clutch so that she can literally go around the stage 3 times without touching it. The Clutch tool does a lot more than that and is definitely one of the best and defining features in the game.

Antistatic

Antistatic

This game needs more attention.

It’s the most Melee-like platform fighter out at the moment in a genre overran by developers too afraid to commit to the formula that made the genre so big competitively.

Most developers try to differentiate their games with weird, unsatisfying, shallow mechanics that end up souring the experience, but this game from my short time playing is more set on pure and solid gamefeel and exploring the genre from it’s roots, with unique movesets instead of directly ripping or tweaking already existing characters.

Real player with 1.9 hrs in game

Very early in development, so it’s lacking in a lot of departments. That said, the core gameplay is tight and with some time most of the problems will be fixed and most missing features will be implemented. Also, the dev seems pretty engaged with the community and is very active, at least on discord, while posting constant updates about the development timeline. Overall, at it’s current state it’s a very ‘rough’ game with a good core that only shows signs of improving.
