Battlecruiser Millenium Gold was for a long time only available as a DVD with copy protection, has never been freeware and became rare. Being a favorite of many fans and after a request (by me among others), it has now been re-released as download on Steam (for now) in a bundle with its predecessors to celebrate the 25th birthday of Battlecruiser 2000AD’s release.

The reasons for a purchase must be clarified by everyone for themselves. Except Battlecruiser Millenium Gold, all other games are free to find on abandonware sites.

Imagine Earth

Imagine Earth

I purchased this game some time ago and have waited a long time to review it, due in part to some issues I had with it, but also because I wanted to be fair, considering that it is an early access game. So with that being said, my review:

So I was flipping through the steam games and I came across this game called “Imagine Earth” in the simulation section, I saw that it had a demo and decided to try it. At the time the demo only had a missions available, a simple interface and not a lot in the way of content… but I was hooked.

I really like Imagine Earth. It’s a fun, lightweight city building game, where you have to keep track of not only economical, but ecological development as well.

The game has come a long way since its appearance on Steam. I get, that a lot of people compare this to games like Anno, don’t! Anno was made by a company worth billions, this game was made by a small indy team.

And especially in times of heat waves and forest fires in North America and South Europe, never seen floods in Europe and Asia it is good to see, that some people still try to educate about global warning.

A cute and challenging little game! There were a few bugs/glitches, and I broke the game right before the last section by wandering through a wall and off the course, but was fun enough to try to blaze through the levels again

It’s pretty good, the puzzles can be quite challenging, like where I wish there was a hint option…

Space Captain McCallery - Episode 1: Crash Landing

Space Captain McCallery - Episode 1: Crash Landing

Lovely sci-fi short story with fun and weird low-poly-art (if pixel-art can be a genre…), simple shooting, platforming and exploration. The best idea of the game is to take the collectathon pickups and make them not only useful but strategic: fruits and mushrooms heal, provide energy for movement and charge the weapon. Also some cause hallucinations, which makes the already kinda trippy game even better looking. Enemies are basic but not boring goofy/creepy aliens, nicely mixed with enviromental challanges (mostly falling). I enjoyed the ideas and the atmosphere and appreciate the dev fixing some minor bugs and even implementing suggestions only hours after I mentioned them. Waiting for the next game.

I’m not sure whether it’s the semi-linear storyline, the third-person player view, or the eating mechanic, but something with this game just doesn’t sit right. Where And All Would Cry Beware! was one of my favourite games, the Space Captain McCallery franchise just seems like it’s missing something. Sure, it captures the surreal look and amazing soundtrack presented in so many other Renegade Sector games, but I just don’t see myself coming back to this one.

Whilst all of this is true, I don’t think it’s a necessarily bad game, and so I can’t in good conscience give it a negative review.

Unknown Planet

Unknown Planet

Two thumbs up from me. Perhaps the game doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, but it has it’s own verve, it’s own charm. I wanted to wait until I had more time under my belt before giving a review, but I’m so pleased by this that I couldn’t wait. I stumbled on this while searching for open world survival craft games. I already have things like Ark for my Xbox One, I was looking for something….. I’m not sure what I was looking for…. something a little different. And “something a little different” is exactly what this is, and I’m totally stoked. Perhaps this might not be for everyone, but I’m digging it :)

I bought a gorgeous chocolate cake for $1,

When I went home to enjoy it, I found that its chocolate was special and unique,

Chocolate flavored sh233it, Chocolate made of sh23it, they are very different,

Obviously I bought the former,That’s good. After all,

I bought a real chocolate cake,

And it cost only $1,That’s enough

Exo One: Prologue

Exo One: Prologue

It’s a demo/prologue. Runs/sessions are 7 1/2 minutes each maximum.

If you pause the game and restart the level before that time limit you can keep the game running forever.

Put your own music on with songs less than 7 1/2 minutes and restart after every song and you’ll be at it for a while.

Grab a wireless controller. Get up, move with the ball, qigong it. (somebody else mentioned smoke: Double Plus Recommend for Double Plus Good time)

I have actually played that many hours. (That could be the review itself.)

Actual review:

The creativity and absolutely incredible graphics of this game are unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s one of those demo games you simply must try in order to understand their thrill and appeal. The scattered elements of an intriguing storyline give me hope for a deeper meaning to the game, apart from admirable beauty and fun mechanics. If you’re considering installing this art piece, go for it as soon as possible. I guarantee you, you will not regret it. Kudos to the developers for making such an eye-catching yet undemanding masterpiece, looking forward to the full version.

Galactic Civilizations III

Galactic Civilizations III

NOTE: This is a review of the Final Release Candidate for the game, so it should apply to the released version.

Having been a long-time GC2 player, I eagerly signed up for the Founder’s Edition early-access over a year ago, and have followed the development of GC3 since then closely.

Let me tell you, getting a 4X game that incorporates all the features that hard-core strategy gamers want, while remaining both relevant and competitive, is really hard. As in, EXTREMELY hard. StarDock has done an excellent job with GC3. That’s not to say there still aren’t quibbles over the direction certain features have taken, but the reality is, that if you actually want to release a game, certain decisions are going to have to be taken, and you’re sure to piss off someone who wanted that feature and didn’t get it. But GC3 is a solid and entertaining game, if not a radically innovative one.

First of all it is critical to understand that the game is still in beta testing and therefore has some glitches. That said it has been pretty stable for me. (Four year old dell xps 8100 with 16gb and a 750 Ti video card). At present the plan seems to be to a go for a final release in May. There will be frequent patches before then and perhaps a beta 6 release (beta 5, with enormous additions, was released yesterday (Mar26). If you don’t like encountering bugs and reporting them to help the game, then wait for the release. Of critical importance remaining is tuning the AI to be smarter and more aggressive, imo.
