I’ll start this off saying I have basically no nostalgia for this series. I got into it literally days before this game released and my god was I missing out. The first game was wonderful and incredibly charming, but this one? Absolutely phenomenal. I don’t play games a lot, as I have trouble focusing on them and get bored easily, but in this game I was completely engrossed the entire way through. The story, the characters, hell, even the environments and overall feel of this game are all top tier. Definitely one of my all time favorites now, and I’m currently slowly working my way to 100%. Double Fine has absolutely outdone themselves with this title.

This game is the sequel I waited over a decade for. The first game was one of my favorite platformers when I found it, and when I had heard there was a sequel coming, I was READY. Now, when I had heard this game was coming, all I wanted was a follow-up to the cliffhanger from 1 (and Rhombus, after that came out). It could’ve played the same, and I would’ve been fine. HOWEVER, not only did the story surpass my expectations of what they could build off of from the world the first game created, the gameplay received so many major improvements. Each power was improved, and could be leveled up after unlocking. New features left and right, each of them incredibly useful and creative. Mental cobwebs were replaced with collectibles that were much more fun. And the devs are always listening to feedback, and that meant so much to see. Given the game’s themes and the target demographic, it deserves that accessibility and attention to details and playerbase. This game blew me away, and while it will never replace the original, it certainly lived up to it.

A pretty good game for a game jam, however there are some things that need to be pointed out.

What I like.

Environment- I honestly enjoyed the environment since it reminded me of those liminal space images you’d see online and the uncanniness of the graphics helps with that.

What needs to be worked on.

Movement- the movement feels too floaty and there is a slight choppiness with the camera.

Quality of life- some quality of life things are missing from the game currently such as the ability to mess with the options from the pause menu, other bits are minor such as the keyboard clipping through the table at the beginning.

Spacious room to move around and clear pathing make Office Simulator a solid platformer. With firm controls and the classic Mario Land style of air control, you’ll have no problem maneuvering the various obstacles strewn about.

Unfortunately however, there is no visible way to boot up Dallen Clicker on the office computer, so I can only recommend getting this during a sale.

Quantum Conundrum

Quantum Conundrum

Many people say this game seems like Portal.

Well, if they mean it looks like a physics-based first-person puzzle-platformer then yes, it is like Portal. The difference is that you manipulate the physics of the level rather than where you enter and exit the ‘test chamber’.

There are 5 dimensions you can change between to alter the physics.

  • Fluffy dimension makes everything that’s not nailed down light enough to pick up.

  • Heavy is the reverse, nothing can be picked up.

  • Time slows everything down, including light beams.

Rating : 8/10

Overview: 1st person puzzle platformer

The Good:

  • The game allows you to switch between 4 different dimensions to solve puzzles and traverse the environment. The first dimension is ‘fluffy’ dimension, which makes objects lighter allowing you to carry them and place them on switches. The second, is heavy dimension, which makes objects heavier, the third is slow time and the fourth is reverse gravity. You can only be in one dimension at a time.

  • The game offers a mix of puzzles and platforming. Some areas are strictly related to one or the other while other areas combine the two. It provides a nice change in pace as you are not strictly doing one thing over and over again.

Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure

Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure

Had the ol’ lockdown blues past few days so I was really in the mood for an old 3D platformer type game to keep me busy but not take up too much concentration. Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure is a cute casual 3D platformer which I think fit the bill pretty well.

Although it has most of the classic characteristics of an old 90s 3D platformer; bright colourful graphics, hub world, collectables, slightly cheesy story, antagonist and characters, what Unbox does slightly differently is the movement mechanic.

-:Updated 13th September to reflect 100%ing it:-

From the moment you start this game you can tell where it gets its inspiration and thats the games of Rare in the 90s. From the cute nonsense babbling characters to the light sense of humour, this is a love letter (no pun intended) to the likes of Banjo and so far I love it. The first world is brimming with charm; from the boxes that follow you around and welcome you to the little cars you can drive. I always think that you can tell the quality of a 3D platformer by how much you want to just forget about the point of it and explore, and this one had me doing it from the start (which is frustrating that it starts with a locked in tutorial).

VR Puppet Game

VR Puppet Game

Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2

So I know this game is free and it’s in Early Access as well, but it’s just a bad experience. I have played many free to play VR games that were a lot better than this experience. There’s very little positive I can say about this game other than it seemed to be running fine (steady fps) and I did not experience any game-breaking bugs.

Unfortunately, everything else I have to say is negative. This is a clunky game with bad visuals. It’s not original either. VarBlocks VR is a better version of this game. The controls are bad, the visuals are bad, the sounds are either non-existent or sound like they were made on a 90s headset mic. The gameplay is just running your puppet towards the green portal while avoiding obstacles. Unfortunately, the gameplay experience is so bad that you’ll want to pay to stop playing this game.

‘VR Puppet Game’ is a platform/interactive experience in which you control a string puppet along with a series of obstacles. While you do have to bear in mind the fact that this is free it is as basic as games get with the most basic of graphics and sadly also levels of control. But I have to say, on paper the idea of this game does have a lot of potential and to be fair it is a good use of the motion controllers. At the end of the day, it is creative indie games like that that will push VR into the future and without them, VR gaming has no future. So for that reason, I give this the thumbs up, but only for creative potential reasons.
