JUMANJI: The Curse Returns

JUMANJI: The Curse Returns

Not what I expected being honest, I was envisioning more interactivity such as those in mario party games, it’s not a bad game but it does feel lacking. After playing for around 11 hours roughly I can say I have adapted to the game-play of dragging the corresponding item to either another character or the enemy at hand, it can be somewhat challenging, especially trying to get the save every location achievement which I had to enlist the help of a friend as the Ai was not working out, this is as far as core game-play goes however.

Very good, but why don’t you have Chinese? As the largest market in the world, if there is Chinese, more people will play it.

There are some difficulties in the game. If it can be saved, it will be better if it can be revived from the place of death rather than from the beginning

JAAHG: The Crows Cry

JAAHG: The Crows Cry

I figured I would check this out and give it the benefit of the doubt since it only had one review and it was negative. I played about 25 minutes and it just wasn’t that great. Sure if it was a free game I would sure check it out it can’t hurt to try it out but for $5 I would say save your money. The premise is standard so you have to find 5 boxes of evidence to see if you are in the location of the missing children. Great, but there isn’t any dialog or papers or anything that explains and expands on a story. It’s just 5 brown boxes that say ‘CLUE?’. Sure that’s fine but is the monster scary? Nope. It’s a scarecrow that will randomly appear and you have to just walk around it.

I’ve been playing this game since the very, very early versions of the Early Access release, before cameras and costumes were a thing, but I’ve taken a long, long time to write a review, mostly because I’m having a hard time to fully express my feelings about this game. There are way too many things to talk about, which means this is going to be a rather lengthy review, and it might also be all over the place due to the amount of stuff that comes to mind, but let’s dive right in.

I’ve spent most of my teenage years and all of my early adulthood wishing for the “perfect” 3D platformer, one that combined most of the things I like in a single, awesome package. I dreamed of a game with a rich, vast world to explore. It had to have a lot of secrets and tricks to discover, but it also had to have well designed platforming and action to boot, and the atmosphere had to evoke feelings of childlike wonderment and adventurous endeavors in boththe soundtrack, the visuals and the story. The characters had to be adorable and stylish, and the gameplay had to be smooth and thrilling.

Poi is a good Mario clone. End of story now get out of the review section and buy the game if you want to kill a good 32 hours collecting things.

okay that’s not entirely true so read this instead

PLOT

You and your sister run away from the city in order to find Adventure. On your adventure to find adventure you meet up with Mario in his mid 80’s who asks you to get his sonic ring with ribbons attached to it down from a tall stump due to him being a crotchety old man who can’t do it himself. So you jump to the top of the stump, grab his ring and when you bring it back to him he tells you that the ring is called an “Explorers Medallion” and they are foudn all over the world. So he asks you and your sister if you want to get on his magic flying whale blimp to find him and since choice matters as much as it did in TellTale’s Walking Dead Season 1 in this game, you say yes and off the three of you go to go get the Medallions and save the world or something

Darkanoid

Darkanoid

Oh yeah! the best version of the great arkanoid. The one-man added to the collection. Classic with modern graphics, I think that there will be no better versions, except maybe some kind of 3D mod) but still I think the limit has been reached and there is no better option than this one)

I love Arkanoid since Dandy and have played a great many, but Darkanoid was able to surprise and delight. The familiar gameplay here is diluted with just a ton of different mechanics and chips that make each new level something interesting and exciting, and most importantly, not like the past.

Oh yes, there are also barefoot shoes, and believe me, they will organize a strong burning for you in the lower back, but it’s worth it.

Overall, this is by far one of the best (if not the best) Arkanoid I’ve played. Nice picture, sound, many levels and mechanics. I definitely recommend it.

The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker

The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker

The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker is a medieval adventure RPG that recreates the ‘oldschool’ atmosphere of adventure games of the past. Journey through a sprawling open world, converse with its inhabitants and progress the story of Rothar Aercrest – the cursed lord to the remote lands of Imberthale. Increase your power by advancing your skill levels and acquiring powerful items, unlocking special attacks and spells which will aid your way in defeating the worst monsters that lurk in the remote corners of the world.

As a core feature Cursebreaker aims to serve you with a satisfying story as you journey through the lands of Imberthale. Tired of ‘epic tales’ of ‘world ending proportions’, Cursebreaker instead offers stories of human pettiness, revenge and greed - all the good stuff. But we promise, it’s all delivered in a non-depressing, approachable manner.

In Cursebreaker you play as Lord Rothar Aercrest, ruler of the remote lands of Imberthale. Or at least he used to be…

One fateful day Rothar’s path crosses that of a wizard, Gabrius, who appears to be both tremendously powerful and frightfully malicious. Consequently Rothar soon finds himself caught within a mortal feud between two powerful wielders of magic, all the while bound by a curse he desperately needs to break away from.

If Lord Rothar is to know peace again, Gabrius must surely die. That might not prove to be such a simple task, however. After all, what is death to the master of the Black Grimoire besides a mere nuisance?

In Cursebreaker there’s no loading a save from a previous point in a playthrough. This means the few choices you are presented with tend to be permanent and can’t be taken back. However, it doesn’t mean that dying in combat is entirely without consequence.

You will “resurrect” in certain locations of the world, inconveniently away from where you died, potentially having lost some of the valuables you may have been carrying. But don’t worry, the game is not designed so you would die a lot and it offers plenty of potions and other tools to protect against death.

Character progression in Cursebreaker is tied to the various skills you can advance. Every interaction in game tends to give experience in some skill area and gaining higher skill levels will unlock appropriate interactions and abilities. While fighting enemies in close combat, for example, you might expect your weapon mastery and defense skills to increase. As they do, you can unlock new defensive & offensive moves as well as the ability to wield more sophisticated weapons and armor.

The spellbook offers an interesting variety of both combat and non-combat utility. Finding and learning new spells may prove a challenge in itself, and casting more demanding spells will require preparation, such as gathering specific ingredients. Feel free to create your own playstyle by using any combination of ranged and melee weapons and spells!

Chopping trees will not only give you crafting materials but also increases your skill in woodsmanship, which may give you access to hidden areas in the wild and help you fight beasts. Similarly, you can advance alchemy by finding and picking special herbs and crafting simple potions, but you will also be able to make bombs and poisons and more.

Our intent is that every skill should provide something unique and be worthwhile to practice. Advancing these skills may also unlock additional options when interacting with objects and NPCs in game. Other available skills currently in game include archery, sorcery, smithing, carpentry, mining, cooking and tailoring.

We aim to provide what we call social multiplayer in Cursebreaker; this means you will be able to see your friends and other adventurers online in some areas of the game, but the interactions you can have with them will be limited only to social functions. You’ll be able to chat with them and inspect the equipment they’re wearing, but you won’t be able to trade with them or otherwise engage in gameplay-related activities with them. This would be an option you can toggle on and off as you prefer.

Two authentic players chatting.

The Gardens Between

The Gardens Between

Imagine playing with a very beautifully illustrated and intricate pop-up book. That is about as good a description I can give you for what The Gardens Between is. You can close and open the page to make things move backwards and forwards. But seeing as this is a digital pop-up book we can add some other mechanics too such as using lanterns to clear fog which would have otherwise been blocking your way. We can spin a dial to mess with the chronological order of other things independent of us….and just in general we can manipulate time to solve puzzles and uncover a fully relaxing and heartwarming story of two friends who love each other.

Real player with 7.8 hrs in game

The first time I loaded The Gardens Between and saw the title screen, I knew I was in for something special. I was reminded immediately of the initial screen for “Braid” a game that I constantly referred back to for The Gardens Between. And like “Braid”, The Gardens Between is a beautiful puzzle game that often uses time as a mechanic and rewards patience, interest and pondering of the tales we tell ourselves of our rose-tinted youth.

The Gardens Between is a universal story then, all told without a script, dialogue or any written words whatsoever. As you journey with our young friends, Arina and Frendt, you get a sense of their personality and their enduring friendship and moments together, through objects that make up the levels and the snippets of moments they share when each is completed.
