Darwin’s Aquarium

Darwin’s Aquarium

The game is a realtime fish simulation with realtime learning artificial intelligence.

Build up a tank, start training and breeding your own fish and maybe some day, start defeating the big evil bossfish!

Earn money by advancing your breeding capabilities, improve your breeding grounds and unlock more valuable fish.

You’ll see plenty of unbelievable fish interaction: Fish that start hunting, fleeing, cooperating. Some might learn to farm algae, other might start to bait less harmful fish… who knows..? There is no limit to the interaction of the fish and every evolution of species can bring new features. Make sure you select your fish carefully and only breed the fittest, so you can compete against the other fish.

It’s up to you and your fish to cooperate with other players or just defeat them- but be warned: Your fish are getting intelligent. They might have their own will soon!

Need For Conquest

Need For Conquest

TL;DR:

The visuals may be basic, but the AI is very well done, which creates tension-filled moments as you try to decide where to allocate your limited troops. You need patience and attention to accomplish anything, which makes things rewarding and addictive (serious case of “one more turn” syndrome for me).

Full review

I’m a veteran strategy game player (my favorites include Civilization, Total War, Company of Heroes and Age of Empires). I was asked to try out Need for Conquest by the developer, who I know personally. I thought I would only check out the game for an hour or two, but then the most unexpected thing happened – I got hooked! This simple Risk clone gave me the biggest “one more turn” syndrome since I played Civilization. I have put off meals and personal hygiene just so I could find out what would happen next turn: Will I finally be able to complete my conquest of South America (and get a nice draft bonus)? Will my defenses in Indochina hold? Will my two AI neighbors fight each other or will they turn their attention to my not-quite-well-defended eastern border? You get the picture. My playtime is now at 60+ hours.

A stock basic RISK like game, whose strength, I imagine, is in the variety of the maps.

I played one game, and while the AI was pretty weak, everything worked. The controls were pretty solid, and the music and sound effects were fine. There was no animation.

Obviously it cannot be a total RISK clone. This game does not have cards to collect, or turn ins, and there is no plus to taking out a fellow player. The game does seem to be trying to work new ideas in to the mix, for example some territories can have a resource called Stones that gives armies in that territory armor. Not sure how that works into the game yet, but it does show creativity.

Cricket 22

Cricket 22

I will still say overall this game is a slight improvement on Cricket 19. Career mode is much, much improved. BUT I think this is still worse than it should have been. The removal of features that would either allow the player to enhance their own experiences with the game or allow quicker modes (like scenarios) are huge losses but the series is still miles ahead of any other cricket game on the market, only Cricket 19 is close. Many of the complaints I have can likely be changed over the life cycle of the game with AI tweaks or patches.

Written after the update on the 4 of Dec 2021.

The updates that have been released in the last couple of days have shown very good signs that the developers are listening to the community and the game is improving daily. It is a good game and you can tell alot of love and time has been put in. If they fix the following points that I will go more into more detail with, I will change my review to “Recommended”.

  • Non striker lags behind the striker when choosing to go for a run,

  • Add another option for the throw meter mechanic in general play or fix the meter to become more responsive

Magnat: Beer Maker

Magnat: Beer Maker

Magnat: Beer Maker is a business simulation and management game. Take the challenge, manage your own beer factory(s), manage your warehouses, employees, production lines and transportation of merchandise.

Logistics to manage

To produce, you usually need a production line, resources to refine, storage and transportation. In Magnat: Beer Maker, the goal being to produce beer, you will need to import and store the raw materials, refine, brew in tanks, store the beer, bottle it and finally send it to the client.

Recruit and manage your employees

When you want to develop your business, there is nothing better than hiring employees to help you with your tasks. The employees in your factory can help you with most tasks and it is up to you to tell them what to do, but be sure to monitor them.

A realistic economy

Every action has a cost and it’s up to you to manage your finances well. From recruitment to transportation to taxes, the whole finance system in Magnat: Beer Maker has been designed to be as close to reality as possible.

Customize and upgrade your factory

In order to produce beer you need all kinds of machines. Once you have invested in new machines, you can place them wherever you want in your factory, but be careful not to block the way of your vehicles and employees! It is also possible to upgrade the equipment you have and produce more efficiently. Expanding your factory if you lack space is also a possibility.

The Steam store page description really got me hyped for this game. I was expecting that game, unfortunately, what I got was rather disappointing. It’s not a bad game, it just wasn’t really interesting for me either.

I did 4-5 playthroughs and I want to say the average was 5 minutes long. Each time I did get different results, but none of them were all that captivating. You can move around the AI creatures, you can rotate the sky around to get a better view, or you can plant plants that will change the rotation of the planet. You’ll get different results.

I wasted 45 minutes looking for intelligence.

Didn’t find any, artificial or otherwise.

5 actors that do nothing but bully each other. Constantly. Trained or not. In the real world, you can watch mono-cellular organisms with more sophisticated behaviours under a microscope.

Storytelling is miserably ineffectual. In this movie with minimal external input, the camera regularly takes control to focus on… well, nothing but stupid cartoonish punches, really. And the actors have less evocative power than wooden door knobs.

This is actually insanely difficult at parts and takes a lot of thought to prioritize abilities or even figure out the game at the start since there’s no tutorial. MAJOR DRAW BACK though I’m not sure if this is attended but the achievement numbers don’t match up to the levels so even if you beat them all you won’t get the achievements. Really neat though gets wild when you get to the silver area and the knights are smacking your people to narnia.

DeadOS

DeadOS

DeadOS is less a game and more a really entertaining toy where you generate a city, populate it with people, and watch a zombie outbreak of your creation slowly take it over. There’s no win/loss state, and your only task is to keenly observe as zombies convert the living, civilians run in droves from the impending horde of undead, and cops create blockades around infection zones to slow the spread.

Though the graphics and presentation are simple, the scale of the simulation impressed me; up to ten thousand people can be simulated in the city. It’s oddly satisfying to watch a fleeing crowd of hundreds, abstracted as a bunch of scurrying yellow dots seen from a bird’s-eye view.

Real player with 10.9 hrs in game

There’s no other game on PC like this. It’s already a pretty nice little sandbox game as it is now, can’t wait for all the features that come out for it over time. I completely recommend this game.
