As far I now played through the story, it is a good visual novel. It does have some of those cliche events and this will be the second game I played develop from Smee. The comedy in here is more entertaining than Fureraba that is the games Smee made before this which did make me laugh while some don’t land for me. I think the romance here is a little weaker than Fureraba in my opinion but I enjoyed the story. If you like this VN and have not tried Fureraba, then I will recommend to play that next if you love what this story offer.

So I heard you like sweets, well my friend you come to the right place

Sugar*style….I must say though, it’s been forever since I played any visual novels from smee. The last thing I played was “Fureraba” back in 2018(?) if I recall correctly and even then, it didn’t grow on me, so I never finished it. This one however, I loved it. Another random visual novel well spent I’d say.

Now about the game

In a nutshell the reason I enjoyed the visual novel was because:

(+) Can’t say no to romance visual novel especially vanilla ones

GENRES: VN, Adventure, Sci-fi, Horror, Biohorror, Biopunk.

PLAYTIME: 2-10 hours

SUMMARY:

DESCRIPTION:

Deep under the surface of the dead Earth, the last haven of humanity — the City — is teeming with life. A combined effort of engineering genius and all mankind’s endeavors, a giant structure made of steel, concrete, and biopolymers, keeps the remnants of civilization one step away from complete extinction.

Josiah Kaviani, a young mathematician and statistician, starts his journey in an underground maze of cramped streets. He is talented and intelligent, but he has one terrible drawback — his unbearable loneliness.

But soon Josiah will have a fateful encounter that will turn his whole life, and his worldview, upside-down. A meeting with someone — or, perhaps, something — that is hidden in such depths that even the cyclopean City cannot reach them. Something so hidden that the very knowledge of it can be deadly. Something truly monstrous.

FEATURES:

  • A well-written world with deep lore and terminology.

  • Complex, adult characters, each with their own motives, aspirations, and skeletons in the closet.

  • A variety of complex and difficult choices that might lead the story to an unexpected end at any time.

  • A dark and frightening science fiction story based on real study.

  • A variety of different routes and endings — realistic situations that end poorly or worse.

  • An atmospheric soundtrack specially written for the game — each track is inextricably linked with the narrative.

  • A lot of high-quality art.

  • Special art gallery where the player can check their progress.

  • Some of the author’s ideas were censored as to be found too dark and cruel…

  • …but most of them remained.

Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder - Act 2

Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder - Act 2

If you’ve read my review on Act 1 of this game you know I not only recommend it but love it. It is a truly unique work of art from my perspective. I adore the artwork in this game, the story and the music.

I am only an hour in but like to take my time going slowly through this game.

The character of Ilar is mysterious and compelling as always throughout the game. I enjoy that the game allows the player to choose their own gender and Ilar is also not defined as a gender so it is up to you to determine that for yourself. The game also uses gender-neutral pronouns implemented in a very natural way. Using they/them or xe/xer. I usually don’t mind if a game does determine genders for the player but this was a refreshing take that really, in my opinion, makes the characters more mysterious and wonderful.

Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder

Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder

A stone tower

You’re woken up with no memory of your past by an elegant, enigmatic stranger called Ilar who tells you that a door to the abyss has opened up and threatens to consume you, unless you do exactly as Ilar says.

A magickal mystery

You’re sucked into a vortex of forces beyond your reckoning - dark magick, bizarre artifacts, shadowy stalkers, and a past life you’ve shared with the stranger that they do everything to hide. Armed with the knowledge that you were a High Magus, and that a botched ritual of yours caused the disaster and your amnesia, you must summon your wits, courage, and force of will to rediscover the spell and undo your mistakes.

A treacherous path

Finding the tower’s secrets, however, will not be easy, for they’re locked tight within your research journal, written on scattered letters, and lying between the lines of Ilar’s words.

On top of that, danger waits around every corner - spells that warp your mind and body, sinister creatures who lurk in the dark recesses, and a relationship with Ilar that borders on explosive at times - everything seems to conspire against you.

But all is not lost, for there are fleeting moments of reprieve - an achingly comforting, recovered memory, an unexpected visit from a loyal companion, a touching moment of connection with Ilar - lifelines and breadcrumbs pulling you inexorably toward an unsettling conclusion.

Can you piece together the scattered puzzle of your life? Can you save yourself and Ilar? Can you keep your mind in one piece until the end?

Features

  • A Visual Novel with almost 200k words that explores a world of ritual magick, pre-industrial technology, and a culture that marries ancient religions of the orient and occident.

  • Be lured into an occult world by artwork made to resemble alchemical manuscripts - intricately hand-drawn with pen and ink, then edited and animated digitally to bring to life.

  • Immerse yourself in the haunting soundtrack weaved from organic sounds, ceremonial instruments, ritual chanting, and glitch effects.

  • Choose who becomes your friend, enemy, or romantic interest.

  • Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder contains Act 1 to 3!

The novel about school stories, reminded me of the game Everlasting Summer, but this game has a good musical accompaniment, and two endings, so far I have passed on one.

I haven’t heard of Fiendish Fiction before but they sure have their fingers on the pulse of horror. This game is a horror lover’s dream. Amazing storytelling, beguiling visuals, and a haunting soundtrack give this game all it needs for a truly scary treat and all just in time for Halloween. Pick this one up if you’re looking for something that’s sure to keep you up all night.

An excellent horror story with well-written characters! Chilling atmosphere. Although there are many endings, none of them feel rushed - each path gives you more insight into the mystery and the characters' motivations. Also, unlocking the secret bonus scene is so worth it.

Adapted Adventures: Crystal Cave

I enjoyed this it’s pretty well written with only a few typos and it’s only an hour long. The characters are a bit bland and the story isn’t anything too dynamic and crazy, but it was interesting. Some of the dialogue can be bad choices in combat but instead of making you start all over from a save point it just makes you go through the choices again until you pick correctly, so that’s nice and merciful by the creators.
