Convoy

Most everyone will use FTL as a benchmark to test rouge like games, so I guess I will compair and contrast on how Convoy stands up to the gold standard of FTL.

The first thing right off the bat with convoy is that the game is much easyer than FTL. This may be seen as ether a good thing or a bad thing seeing that a lot of FTL’s claim to fame is its unfair dificulty and numerous game overs, but I for one see it as more of a good thing because there seems to always be a way to win in Convoy whereas in FTL a lot of the games have you already losing before you start because of RNG.

Here comes another FTL comparison review. I just have to do it because reading the other ones is painful.

I keep reading these reviews where people say the combat is easy or that there is no depth to it and I just have to wonder how far they’ve managed to get.

Because if you just order your vehicles to fire at random cars without giving it a second thought, you get shredded rather quite quickly about midgame, no matter how powerful weapons you might have.

So yes - let me start off with - the meat of the game, the combat. Let’s imagine FTL-like is a genre, then this definitely fits in that genre. However, to make an FPS analogy, this is to more of a Battlefield to FTL’s Team Fortress. The two games are undeniably similar in their mechanics, but the way you play them is completely different.

Dustoff Z

Dustoff Z

Nice little snack-size blast-em-up to enjoy between bigger gaming jaunts. I’m surprised this has so few reviews on steam as it’s perfectly functional and cheap game to pick up and gun through on a lazy weekend afternoon. Ignore the time played, I probably took about 4 hours to complete this fully.

The basic premise is you fly a helicopter about on a 2.5D plain after a zombie apocalypse has occurred, strafing zombies down below, all the while performing convoy escorts, base defense, cargo delivery, and survivor rescues. You upgrade the helicopter and onboard gunners with coins and parts/supplies that you collect/earn for completing missions. There is quite a variety of zombie types arrayed against you with plenty of damage they can bring to bear on you (and even the unarmed walkers have a serious jump you need to dodge or you’ll be pulled out of control into a horde). You have to manage your fuel, health and ammo meters throughout each mission which you top up from collectibles that spring from killing zombies or landing or recharge helipads, which also double as in-mission save spots.

Hi everyone I am the bkbossman, you can find me on youTube and publishing videos here on steam. First off I’d like to thank Alf and Marie from Zordix publishing for putting me in touch with this little gem.

I’ve played a few hours of Dustoff Z now and I’m enjoying it thoroughly, it has definitely taken the great aspects of the original Dustoff Heli rescue and enhanced them with a better tech tree, graphical enhancements and a fun and engaging story line.

The original was simple involving just 4 upgrades (2 choppers and 2 guns) and focusing on great game play, something which has transferred well into this latest iteration. The tech tree has been expanded so you now have not only more helicopters to choose from but you can upgrade them individually. You can also now choose to have gunners on your chopper and the type you bring with you can affect your progression in the game.

A classic-style beat em up made by a small team. Impressive! I enjoyed the three heroes and great variety of enemies. They looked realistic; almost like digitized actors. The music was catchy, and stages were fun. The cutscenes with the reporter, hero, and the ending were a nice touch. I felt it could use voices for landing hits, continue, difficulty setting, and maybe free lives, But well done on this indie game.

Death Rally (Classic)

Death Rally (Classic)

If you haven’t tried Death Rally Classic, you do not know what you are missing. I originally owned this game on a cd before getting the system I have now. I will add this warning. This game won’t play on the El Capitan of Mac Os X software, the closest it comes is Yosemite.

The game runs a lot smoother than it ever did on my Cd and it’s great to relive a classic. Plus there’s an added bonus for all you Duke Nukem fans. He’s one of the selectable drivers in this game and comes with his classic “Hail to the king, baby” lines when he comes in first.

Haven’t played this for damn near twenty years, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it on Steam; for free no less! Iirc, my parent’s crap Gateway had this as demoware, so I could only play a few rounds. Even so, I enjoyed the occasional break from Full Tilt.

Reading through the first several negative reviews, it’s clear a lot of players didn’t didn’t get past the learning curve. This is a game from the 90’s, so go ahead and set the bar accordingly. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy this little morsel from the past:

An extremely fun game to play whether you have friends or not. It’s a very easy game to get into, and even easier to sink into. Especially when competing with the leader boards.

There are various modes and events to try including a pretty easy to use track maker and various different vehicle types!

Real player with 34.5 hrs in game

Recent updates have made the game more stable, and the developer is working on new features, which is really good. Lots of bugs have been fixed since release.

The game has several fun gamemodes, two types of track editor (one currently in beta, as of writing this review), multiple car classes, including street, formula, karts, trucks, boats, among others. The difficulty is alright most of the time, but do not play drift mode on mountain circuit. Just don’t, you’ll regret it. That was the first thing I played, and it lead me to leave a negative review at first.
