Modern Tales: Age of Invention

Modern Tales: Age of Invention

Modern Tales: Age of Invention was an impulse buy. It was on sale for £4.19 and I just really wanted to play a puzzle game. So I purchased, downloaded and started playing immediately. I have several issues with this game, but it’s generally good if you’re not looking for anything special.

PROS:

  • Art style is nice, though the talking animations are weird (but I expected this from a 4 quid Big Fish game tbh).

  • The puzzles are genuinely pretty fun to solve and the sound effects are super satisfying.

First impression

The first thing you’ll notice is the game looks beautiful, it’s a 2d horizontal shmup but all the graphics and animations are 3d rendered. The art style looks like it could have been by inspired by HR Giger but it’s a lot creepier. What stands out as well is that it’s a twin stick shooter. It may look a bit unusual with all weapons coming from one point in front of the ship but it works well. It allows for the game to bombard you with enemies coming from all directions even while you’re manouvering through tight tunnels and obstacles.

6180 the moon

6180 the moon

6180 is a minimalist platformer where you play as the moon on a mission to wake the sun. The name derives from the amount of time it took to create the alpha (roughly 1 hr, 43 min). Its key feature is the ability to loop around from bottom to top of the screen, and using this to get around all manner of obstacles. The real game begins after you’ve reached the sun…

Pros

  • Simple controls, ease of play

  • Clean interface & design

  • Simple progression of difficulty with introduction of new mechanics

6180 The Moon, as has been mentioned in reviews before my own, was so named as this is the number of seconds it took the developers to make its prototype - around an hour and 45 minutes (thanks for the correction madsen). But why is this so important? Well, it’s my issue with this game; it feels like it never developed far beyond a fun little coding or development project.

Aside from the screen-wrapping mechanic you can see in the trailer, 6180 The Moon features all the typical “minimalistic puzzle-platformer” fare you might expect, albeit at a very rudimentary level. Move from left to right across the screen, get to the objective, and avoid the spikes. Levels are short and relatively uncomplicated, with difficulty in most puzzles coming through manipulation of the gravity mechanic. In essence, jumping pushes you out the top of the screen and in through the bottom; you hit an arc somewhere in the middle, and float right back down again. And that’s the game.

Skyland: Heart of the Mountain

Skyland: Heart of the Mountain

This game was totally useless. It was confusing and full of shyte half the time. I’m not even sure the writers understood the story half the time. It is a beyond convoluted futuristic end of the world type plot with characters dressed up like Lara Croft one minute and a Viking princess the other. There is all kinds of technical mumbo jumbo and very little explanation for anything. Sometimes it felt like Artifex was trying to be scientifically accurate instead of entertaining. We don’t give a damn if the technology is correct! Just give us a game that isn’t some 40 year old trekkie’s wet dream.

Game Visuals

I want to mention that the visual for the game is nicely done. The visuals can be adjusted in the game’s option menu. Please do note that this is an old game, it might not play well on wide screen monitors in full screen mode; due to the game’s format.

Clockwork Tales: Of Glass and Ink

Clockwork Tales: Of Glass and Ink

Clockwork Tales: Of Glass and Ink is a point-and-click puzzle game which pays homage to deceased Polish author Jan Brzechwa’s series of stories surrounding Pan Kleks/Mr. Inkblot. Developed by Artifex Mundi, it was originally released in August of 2013, and put onto Steam in April of 2014, with achievements and trading cards. The game itself follows Evangeline Glass as she tries to help her mentor and friend, Dr. Ambrose Ink, investigate a series of increasingly violent tremors rocking the planet and seemingly originating in the nestled burg of Hochwald. After his abduction early on, it falls entirely to Evangeline to not only solve the mystery surrounding the quakes and save Hochwald, but rescue Ink from his captors.
