Creeper World 2: Anniversary Edition

Creeper World 2: Anniversary Edition

Another classic I played many times on Kongregate.com. This takes the concept from the first game and gives you a sideview perspective rather than a top down, and it also adds new toys to destroy Creeper with. The missions get progressively harder as you go on and you aren’t always allowed the luxury of consolidating your power before going on the offensive. It’s a tactical and strategic masterpiece of a game wherein it seems simple on the surface but becomes very complex as the game goes on. Furthermore you learn to anticipate the unexpected and make ready for it. You also learn to restrain your desire to build everything at once and maximize your energy usage to build more efficiently to deal with rampages, particularly the drones that spawn on the later maps. Probably one of the best additions to the game that wasn’t present in the original was the inclusion of conversion bombs, which allow you to turn pools of creeper into your own anti-creeper lakes. This can come in extraordinarily handy at times, though the missions that this wonderful tool exists are counted on the fingers of one hand. Still, the thing that really made this game different from the first other than the perspective was the inclusion of the Nullifier weapon which lets you destroy the Creeper Emitters and spawn-gates for the drones and phantoms. No longer do you just have to perform lockdown, now you can actually destroy the sources directly.

Have you played any of the Creeper World games? Do you like Tower Defense, RTS or Puzzle games? Do you like games that are easy to pick up, but have a difficulty curve that can ramp up to 11? Then the odds are you will like this game.

If you haven’t played any of the other Creeper World games, the main premise is that there is Creeper (purple goo) that wants to destroy everything. It flows like water, seeping in and punishing you for not paying attention to what seems like a few pixels that you thought wouldn’t be a problem. You have to protect a base, make buildings to produce energy and then make weapons to destroy the Creeper.

I played this game years ago, for free, on Armor Games, and when I saw it for sale cheap on Steam I thought I would give it a try. It has not disappointed.

The core is a basic tower defense game, with a great personality and a fun sense of humor. It has an interesting twist where instead of the units crossing the map and leaving, they are striving to grab one of your five gems, then return out the way they came. It does limit where you can build towers, and what types can go where, which might frustrate people, though they do have certain spots where can put any kind of tower. It doesn’t bother me, and I feel allows for more interesting level design.

I fondly remember playing this on Armor Games (the flash site). It didn’t have as much content, and had a few mechanics that were different.

The moment I saw this on Steam, I wanted to get it. Not only because it was nostalgic to me, but also because it was improved a lot from the flash version. None the less, here’s what I think:

-The gameplay is great: It’s very simple, but has quite a bit of depth to it that makes it very replayable: The goal of the game is to use and upgrade the Orc, Undead and Demon towers to kill the invaders and not let them get all your gems.Granted, to lose all your gems and fail you’ll need to let the invaders steal them on purpose, but there is a scoring system that rewards you the better you take care of these precious jewels. You get one star (Good) for saving 1-4 gems, two for saving all your gems, but with one or more getting stolen at one point (Great), and three for having all 5 perfectly intact (Brilliant). The game’s levels are contained within various areas, which have their own enemies, bosses, and various other gimmicks. Completing an area will unlock Night Mode for all of its levels. Night Mode spikes the difficulty by forcing you to place towers near areas that are lit, such as the gem caves, your towers’s ranges, etc. You once again get ranked with Good, Great, or Brilliant star ratings. Overall pretty solid.

Hi there! Well, I’m from development side, so don’t be surprised by my hours on record. I was responsible for music and sounds, so I’ll just skip that part and try to describe other areas as independent as possible.

Cons:

  • There are still some bugs. Some of them are unnoticeable, some of them like to show off, and some of them are actually features, so please finish the tutorial and check out the “How to play” thing in case of any doubts. Anyway, your gameplay shouldn’t be affected much, existing bugs don’t block you from finishing the game and getting all the achievements.

Hi there!

My impression of this game is quite positive to recommend it to other gamers.

Pluses:

  • interesting plot

  • funny text quests

  • simple and clear UI

  • awesome art with unique style

  • music sounds great

+Vicky. No comments.

Minuses:

-tutorial could be more detailed

-some little bugs. They don’t strongly affect on the game, sometimes help to win faster.

  • not for children, esp. because of some offensive things.

I especially like the music. It works perfectly in the game itself, but it’s also really nice to listen to on it’s own. It gives the game a feeling of tension and urgency when things are getting hectic. It also has a very nice contrast between more ambient and wonderful tracks, while the player searches empty or friendly locations, and the stimulating tracks of hostility.

h8machine is a cardgame set in a dystopian future in which Artificial Intelligence 🤖🤖🤖 has completely overtaken the online world 🌐🌐🌐 but the worst part is - it learned to behave just like us…

but the AI is not just in the story! an in-game neural network allows you to customize and randomize 2D art in real time! with this TECHNOLOGY, you can fully immerse yourself in the world of anime profile pics posting complete garbage. it’s just like real life social media!

no one uses realtime-with-pause in cardgames, probably for some good reason. but screw it, I like RTWP so I just put it in!

you will strategize around the use of timers as the flow of time is your main resource! there is no turns and all cards time out, resulting in a gameplay like you haven’t seen before. will you get lost in the hectic chaos of ticking timers, or will you optimize every fraction of a second at your disposal? remember: the active pause system allows you to play any card you want while the time stops. use it to make your decisions and execute powerful combos!

are you tired of collecting cards one by one and having to remove the crap ones from your deck as a deckbuilder game goes on? in h8machine, instead of trying to collect a deck card by card, you grab packets of cards with their own “personalities” - internet stereotypes and whatnot. each of these personalities contributes 1/3 of your deck, and you can mix&match them to easily form decks with a pre-constructed feel

RFM

It was all going so well.

One day the world is experiencing a golden age of technology, the next it’s forcibly merged with an alternate dimension. It happens.

Now there’s a new reality, a world between worlds: The Bast.

RFM is a roguelite tactics game where you can play, pause and plan. You are Morgan, dimension-diving merc, delving deeper and deeper into The Bast at the behest of the factions looking to exploit this new reality.

But you’re going to need help to survive in the depths. Help, and a whole lot of skill.

RFM combines the tactics of grid-based strategy with the thrills of an action game. Each level plays out in realtime, but you can pause to assess the battlefield, prep your attacks and plan your next move. Use mods and equipment to enhance your preferred style of play and overcome your foes.

Inspired by the Golden Age of Space and seventies retro-futurism, RFM’s cel-shaded art and unique atmosphere, set to an irresistibly catchy soundtrack, means diving into the unknown has never felt so stylish.

You’re not alone on your journey into The Bast. As a mercenary you’ll deal with close associates and vying factions: everyone wants a piece of this new reality. But going deeper means getting better, and you’ll have to create unlikely alliances to procure the equipment you need to dive deeper.

  • Unique tactical battle system combining real-time action and time-freezing strategy

  • Every dive is different: change your strategies on the fly to counter a dimension in flux.

  • A hyper-stylish retro-future set to a catchy original soundtrack

  • Discover the secrets of each world and work towards a mysterious final goal

Holy Potatoes! A Spy Story?!

Holy Potatoes! A Spy Story?!

Holy Potatoes! A Spy Story?! is a quirky game full of puns and references of pop-culture. Despite the cheesy puns which can be quite cringyworthy at times, the gameplay and the interface is seemly well-thought of. Although I do like that it’s on PC (bigger screen), I believe the game would fare better on mobile too.

The art really appeals to younger audiences or people who prefer this kind of art style. It is one of the rare 2D art games that actually delivers in consistency and it looks much better that it’s previous titles.

I’m always on the fence about these potato games - they look appealing to me, but sometimes I can tell I won’t like them watching videos and I tried one and didn’t like it (3&4 below). This one was a winner for me for because:

1. No resource collection (3 woods + 2 stone to make an axe or whatever). In this game it just takes a spy’s time to make an item.

2. Creates good choices - do I want to make a lot of small investments in training my spies or save up for a big building upgrade?

3. The missions are generically fun enough that they don’t depend on choose your own adventure multiple choice which will lose its appeal once you know the right answers.

Charge

Charge

You play as a silent protagonist armed with a charge gun, and your ultimate goal is to progress through all levels presented by the game. Each level is a room that has only one exit, and your goal is to overcome any obstacles (such as humanly unreachable platforms or remotely-controlled closed doors) to reach that exit and progress to the next level.

To your help you have charge gun, cube and charge-proof walls (emitting light-blue segments). Charge gun is capable of positively or negatively charging cube and charge-proof walls. Depending on the charges applied, the interaction between them will be different:

  • if cube and wall have opposite charges - cube will attract and eventually static cling to the wall;

  • otherwise (alike charges) cube will repel away from the wall.

The closer those are, the stronger the effect.

There are major restrictions when it comes to charging objects:

  • cube can either be positively OR negatively charged at the same time, or neutral;

  • only one wall charge of the same sign can exist at the same time, and applying new alike wall charge to another location removes old.

You will need to figure out how to take advantage of these tools and manipulate objects to progress through. Almost every level forces you to learn a new way of using these tools, and some of the mechanics that you already learned in previous levels are mixed in.

Particle Fleet: Emergence

Particle Fleet: Emergence

TLDR; Awesome game…get it!

I first discovered the KnuckleCracker games with CreeperWorld 1 on some flash games site. At first the game looked pretty basic and simplistic, but I soon found out that was far from correct. Fast forward a few more years to Creeper World 3 (CW3) and I was stunned not just by the game itself, but by the community of map builders. Virgil (the developer of the games) had introduced a scripting language to allow players to create practically anything they could imagine within the world.

Real player with 201.0 hrs in game

TL;DR. A nice RTS, in the mold of previous games from the same developer, but different enough that you won’t feel you’ve paid twice for the same product.

If you were a fan of Creeper World (any one of the 3), you may be disappointed. There is no Creeper in this game. “Wot?”, I hear you say, “A Knuckle Cracker game with no Creeper? That’s an abomination!”

Maybe so. But remember there was not always Creeper, and maybe there will not be always Creeper - in the CW3 story, there were references to other, long-forgotten races, the Ticon and the Seloi. Maybe they too have stories. Maybe there was (or will be, or always has been) things that were not Creeper and that were hostile. Maybe they were not explicitly hostile - after all, if we need a canoe, are we explicitly hostile to the entities that occupied the ecosystem of that tree that we need for the canoe?
