Rot Gut

Rot Gut

6.2/10 - 1920’s Mafia Pixel Platformer with Elements of Noir

I had fun with this game, but I got it for free prior to the finalization of the game I assume since the release now says July 16. I received the game from an unknown friend*, they made a point to say they weren’t affiliated with the developer but I have my suspicions, especially since I played it over a month ago… Regardless, it was fun!

The game is a pretty simple Pixel/Platformer shooter. You must traverse 7 stages using only a few guns of choice; certain guns are more effective against different enemies so don’t get too attached to a single weapon. You will be taking down the mafia in this short but sweet game; it took me about 35 minutes to complete it. So at $2, be aware of the game’s length, but if you like platformers I think you’ll dig this.

  • The game is balanced in difficulty almost perfectly (for me at least). Others may find this game too easy I found it just challenging enough.

  • This is Top 5 in terms of action platformers I’ve played on Steam so far. Just so you know where I’m coming from some other great ones are DuckTales Remastered, Metal Slug (Series), Mutant Mudds Deluxe, & Tiny Barbarian DX.

  • Rot Gut could’ve used controller support.

Bottom line this game is worth the time it takes to play and the price being asked.

The idea is very nice and one can tell the effort it has been put on it, cool atmosphere.

But frankly, this game has no more than 40 minutes gameplay, it cannot be sold for the price it has. It is quite sad. It would be better to bundle it with other games. Or maybe I missed something?

First of all, this game is an absolute piece of art, there’s no doubt about it. This goes beyond gorgeous visuals and a banger OST - this thing truly captures the essence of nineties' shooters at their best, cleverly hiding modern game design under retro look&feel. The level design is generally more thought out and balanced, there are no blatantly unfair or frustrating things to be found, and the controls are as tight they ever were. For me, these things already make up the asking price.

Now, the game is not without it’s problems, though. People tend to complain about the amount of content. That criticism I don’t agree with. Most people complaining about that have played the normal difficulty through in a couple of hours and feel the game is through. But as the devs have explained, the real game is the hard mode. I’m pretty sure most of us will NOT clear that on the first sitting, and there’s plenty of game left after normal mode playthrough.

The fact that the developers listened so much to our feedback from the demo already deserves praise. I’m not going to go into details, but basically, they improved on basically every aspect of the game by a lot and made the more frustrating parts less frustrating, or non-existent.

While it’s a joy to see all the differences and improvements in the game compared to the demo, the game itself is fantastic. It’s a high adrenaline action platformer, where split second decisions will always demand your focus pretty much all the time. It really wears down your fingers, but this is exactly what we came for. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t just for oldschool platformer veterans, since now they added difficulty levels which is a welcome addition. Don’t EVER feel bad for playing it on Easy or Very Easy. Get familiar with the feel of the game, the different type of enemies, stages, etc. Then if you feel like you’ve mastered that difficulty level, you can always challenge yourself by playing it one difficulty level above. But it also pleases the more hardcore crowd. The Normal difficulty I feel like is just right, it offers a good challenge.

The Climate Trail

The Climate Trail

‘Even if we were to stop putting out greenhouse gases right now, we’d still face decades of warming’ - Jamais Cascio

This is an Educational Awareness game that focuses on the Greenhouse Effect and the impact being made to the ozone layer - it sets a scenario where society has collapsed as we know it today and sets you on a survival resource trail.

If this isn’t your type of game (or you avoid resource management like I usually do!) it’s a free choice!

William Volk has created a free-play game based around the mechanics of The Oregon Trail yet placing the player into a scenario where Global Warming has caused the Oceans to rise causing countries (or States in this case) to be flooded. This has devastated society to the point a new currency of trade is in use and we see the only way to survive is to abandon the flooded regions and head to higher grounds.

This is a really great game to remind us all of how well and truly hosed we are, if we can’t get global warming under control. Played to the end and, and didn’t regret it. (A bit boring or grindy at times, but that’s far overshadowed by the existential horror of our planet’s current tragectory. Oof.) Definitely worth playing! :)

Downtown

Downtown

The city is under siege and you have no abilities whatsoever… yet. Help Chip gain more fighting abilities (as well as increased stamina and health!) as you fight your way Downtown!

Chip was just lounging on the couch like any other typical day when his girlfriend went out to buy some food (she said something about shortages and unrest, or something like that) when he sees on the news that chaos broke out around the local convenience store, fences were erected and no one can get into Downtown! He must find a way in and save her, but first he must learn some skills.

Purchased this game for $1.99 today based upon the video of the game play as I love RGS (Run & Gun Shooters) like this and it’s not half bad. My only gripe is that you have to play the game with the damn keyboard using WASD for directions and the J button to shoot your gun and the K button to jump. My suggestion to the programmer is to put in controller support. With controller support this game would be totally fun to play instead of just “neat”. It’s the game mechanics of SHINOBI with the look and feel of Rolling Thunder or Dead Fox: Human Weapon (Codename Viper) but with a Satanic Occult twist to it. I like the main character’s name is Sgt. Kick Ass. LOL It’s $1.99 so one can’t complain too much, if you’re willing to adjust to the WASD +J&K Keyboard layout (to me fingers are too close), I’d say Buy the game. I really do hope in the future it gets controller support. It could’t be that hard to do.

I hope they don’t take long to publish a second part.
