Notebook Artillery

Notebook Artillery

Artillery games were one of the first games I played on a computer back in those antediluvian days of yore. This is a very nice successor to those games. The drawing style reminds me of a friend of mine’s style from high school and the blue-lined notebook paper is a really nice touch. Altogether very much worth the price.

Retro Machina

Retro Machina

“Retro Machina is a hand-drawn action-adventure game set on a planet covered in lush plantation and the remains of an old long-forgotten human civilization. But ruins are not the only thing you’re going to find! Discover the retroscape city Endeavor, the only intact remaining sign of human life on the planet, inhabited only by the robots created to maintain it.”

Retro Machina is retro in all of its aspects, including an element that could put you to the ultimate test of finding out if you carry the true gamer soul in you - backtracking. Backtracking used to be one very popular element in the structure of a lot of cult-classic and in general classical gaming experiences. Although for some this is a minus, for me it is quite the opposite - this is part of the game difficulty, and a huge tribute to classic games.

If you find this review to be helpful, my curators page is here: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/The_dull_games_reviewer

In Retro Machina you play a robot stuck on a factory line that seemingly exists to build an unending stream of ammunition and parts for a war without end. Each side is automated and pumping out supplies as they follow the final directives of a civilisation that has long been dead.

When a butterfly (seemingly one of the last few organic things left) comes onto the production line, it distracts your robot and for whatever reason totally mesmerises them. Refusing to obey orders and get back to work, they are captured and shipped off, presumably for scrapping or re-programming due to being defective.

The Dream Machine: Chapter 1 & 2

This is a review of the full game

Artstyle

Unusual, intricate, sometimes strangely beautiful, sometimes downright weird (towards the end). The main protagonist is stop-motion animated clay, the backgrounds are all handcrafted from a variety of materials. It takes some getting used to but it really grew on me.

The music and sounds are very well done and enhance the atmosphere of the game. There’s no voice acting, you have to read the dialogue which sometimes is a bit tedious but on the whole is well written and not too long.

Just add this to the list of things that prove that video games are art.

This game has some of the most intriguing, gorgeous, adorable (and in many instances disgusting) designs ever contructed. The art style is like if the film “Mirror Mask” were made into a game. And the plot is just as gorgeous and surreal. “The Dream Machine” is like the ultimate indie game.

You play as Victor Neff, a self-proclaimed “handsome” man, who has just moved into a strange new flat with his pregnant wife, but things get strange very quickly when your wife notices the landlord acting really weird. I will not spoil any of the plot. It is a game you must see to believe, but if you can believe it, there is in fact a Dream Machine in the game.

Guinea Pig Parkour

Guinea Pig Parkour

Guinea Pig Parkour is a completely hand-drawn 2D platformer with adventure elements, drawing heavy inspiration from ’90s animated cartoons and games. It is animated and developed completely by one artist, Jeff Mumm, and features music and SFX by Fat Bard.

Run, jump, swing, flip, vault, climb, crawl, and parkour through classic platformer inspired levels. Talk to, interact with, help, and annoy a host of funny characters as you progress through a “lost ’90s cartoon episode.”

Each animation in Guinea Pig Parkour is completely hand-drawn, frame-by-frame at 24 frames per second - every single frame a different drawing - to capture the full, fluid quality of traditional animation.

Warning This game as intense amount of screen shaking and may effect those who are sensitive to motion sickness*

Monster Seek (Ep.1) has wonderful graphics and music with simplistic (non complicated) controls. You character looks like a cross between Dr. Light (megaman) and George Lucas (Star Wars) which got me invested from the first moment I saw the game.

The Bridge

The Bridge

The Bridge is a 2D puzzle game with beautiful Escher-like architecture and level design, hand-drawn black-and-white art and its own laws of physics. It is divided into 48 levels with the first half requiring minimal use of logic and feeling like somewhat of a pushover; fortunately, this is mostly remedied in the second half—a mirrored version of the first with additional obstacles thrown in and where a greater number of puzzles actually make you think.

The puzzles start off easily enough, with simple gravity manipulation and key collection, then introduce additional elements consistently: deadly balls which roll as you rotate the environment and can adhere to their own laws of gravity; points which invert gravity and shift you between black and white dimensions where you may only interact with objects matching your current color; vortexes which suck anything near them into place and hold them there until deactivated; mirror images of yourself which require entering multiple doors or picking up multiple keys simultaneously to progress; and gravity curtains, where you may remain stationary while rotating the world to work objects into their desired positions relative to your own.

Let me start by saying that The Bridge is not a bad game. For an indie game the developers should be proud of what they’ve accomplished. If there were a somewhere-between-thumbs-up-and-thumbs-down button this is the game I would most want to use it for.

I leaned on the side of not recommending it though, for several reasons. This game is inevitably compared to Braid because it has an artsy style, time manipulation, and puzzles. But it’s nowhere near the level of those other puzzle games I love, including Braid or Limbo or even Master Reboot. The reason is mostly depth and story. There simply isn’t that much here. And what does exist is far too obscure and limited to be moving.

Astria Ascending

Astria Ascending

This game is a really good addition to the JRPG genre. Combat doesn’t feel clunky and not overly complex. Graphics is certainly good, the cities, the characters and the effects used in battle. I just don’t like how other characters feet are drawn but that’s for a few characters. What really interest me is the job system. You can really customize them in many ways and so far none of the classes feels the same nor repetitive. Imagine your tank becoming a black mage and it freaking works well LOL.

I was hesitant about buying this game because of many reviews. The best advice i offer is that if you are a fan of JPRG, you must try it yourself. If YOU are in the same ship, please read all

Ok, thanks.

Overall is a tad of many classics, and maybe that´s the problem with many reviews: they automatically expect or compare this to all of them labelling it “not a classic”.

Gameplay wise It has the “charge” mechanic, all the spells and conditions, invocations and the swap character in the middle of the battle; in the many hours i have played haven’t gotten tired of, it reminds a little of Octopath. The only grip if you can say so is some spikes in difficulty, but amazingly you can customize the random encounters from a menu (if you don’t want random, if you want the enemies to respawn or not in a dungeon) you can always grind like in most rpg and rethink the strategy for that lost battle, dungeon or boss.
