Gamedev Beatdown

The game is awesome. I had fun playing and making different decisions for my games and felt addicted at some stages. Non-game developers will definitely get an idea and insights into the game development process after playing this game.

Gamedev Beatdown is a turn based action rpg game with a quirky story depicting development of games in the gaming industry.

The game revolves around different playable characters from different departments of the gaming industry and gives the player a unique incite into the decision making that goes into making a game.

Even though you will end up making difficult choices that can impact your game in terms of sales or customer satisfaction, the game has a pun based humorous dialogue lines that will make you laugh and make the tough decisions look trivial.

City Game Studio

I joined the open beta for City Game Studio a little while ago. Ever since I have seen it grow substantially. The game has been improved so much in a short amount of time and I can only see it getting better and better from here on out. The developer is very active and takes all the feedback and criticism he gets very seriously. Many of my own suggestions have already made it into the game and whenever an issue arises he is quick to fix it.

The game takes place in a city where you can rent, buy and even build your own studios and exhibitor centers. When your company is doing good you obviously want to expand and get even larger teams working on even bigger titles. The result of that can be very satisfying.

Overview

First off, on advice from this author’s attorney Frankie “Fine Print” Lymann, copycat games are not a crime. (See Data East USA v. Epyx for proof that copycats do not constitute copyright infringement.) Remember Game Dev Tycoon? Take the awesomeness of the aforementioned game, add interior decorating, an outside world where buildings can be rented, bought, and even constructed, and then add in some nice new ideas (along with a bad idea) and you have City Game Studio. In case the reader doesn’t know, the game is a management sim in which the player starts a game company starting in the year of the player’s choosing, and goes from rags to riches through developing and publishing video games.

“Columns…a reference to a very old match 3 puzzle game that this game emulates in no way, shape, or form…”

This is much less a game, than it is, a way to unwind and chill, maybe needle out some emotions.

Well, I say that, but, it is only mostly so, because A-Eye, the main interactive persona, the one ‘controlling everything’, does make it harder at some point, and the chill factor drops until one can pass it, and get the apology waffle.

This is mostly a medium of popular references. Olympics, sports, video games, hobbies, academics&trivia, and even a nod or two towards the likes of authors that wrote about humanity’s downward spiral, though no names are directly mentioned, I definitely got some vibes of George Orwell, to name one.

This is a very simple, 2d game, that in terms of gameplay isn’t extremely exciting but it’s 100% worth just for the story itself. I randomly found this game yesterday and decided to install it, not really expecting much from it. But, the more you “press any button”, the more you get immersed in this story and relate to this cute little character called A-Eye, who, if you are anything like me, you will just want to hug and tell everything is going to be ok, by the time the game is over.

Don’t want to spoil the game too much, but if you have an hour to spare (probably less than that), you should give this game a go. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions.

Disclosure: I’m friends with one of the conceptualizers of the game.

Enjoyable game for the price. Simplistic in nature but a generally addictive nature will make players want to keep coming back to the game. The game has you running your own Steam storefront where you have to monitor your stats to assure they aren’t too high or too low, otherwise its game over.

The game suffers from some bugs such as no matter what the event is, every time you swipe right on a card, your game count will increase by 1, even if the choice doesn’t involve publishing a game to Steam and the confusing stat adjustments made in correspondence with your decisions (how does accepting games have the same positive influence on developers as when you deny them?)

Well I originally wrote a long rant about why I hate these devs after they’re first success that was half-decent, but then I realized I would probably get deleted for it, so here’s my attempt at a reasonable and constructive review for this game.

Don’t buy it, Reigns is better. Long story short, it just seems like a cash grab to me, as was their last game after the initial lootbox simulator success that was alright but probably not worth the cost. It’s a half baked concept they put a price on to cash in on. Or perhaps an attempt at a game inspired by games like reign that they gave up on either out of boredom or inability to manage to work out kinks and bugs. I would suggest Game Dev Tycoon or other similar rip offs if you’re looking for the steam-esque simulators. I have a degree in computer game development that I haven’t used in 3 years because I wasn’t a fan of it, so I have a basic understanding of how to make a game. If I bothered to do research I could probably make this myself for free. Anyway, not worth a look if you ask me, if you’re looking for anything from these guys, the only good thing is I can’t believe it’s not Gambling, the first one, not the second.

Missing Features: 2D

Missing Features: 2D

Few troll games have charm, and Missing Features: 2D kept me playing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O3V-hg6gFc

If you want to see my first impressions as they happened, check out the video above. Make no mistake, Missing Features: 2D is a troll game. But it has fairly tight control, and it’s surprisingly charming. Levels that might be mediocre in another game have a steady feeling of progression here. You’re not just beating levels, you’re unlocking basic features. That might sound boring on paper, but it’s surprisingly effective in practice. Once you unlock music, it’s the best music you’ve ever heard even though it would have been mediocre if it had simply been included from the start. As sprites and animations come together, you see a simple game develop over time, making you feel like you’re along the ride for development. Not many games give you that feeling.

A little background:

I’m a professional developer schooled in C### and Java. I am however not schooled to create games, but I know how the mechanics work. 3D game development is more of a hobby/side-project. Please read my review as such, if you’re completely new to programming, my feeling about this product can greatly differ from your perspective. Most of my pros and cons are subjective. But true in my opinion. Also: I use this product only for 3D development, I have no interest in the 2D side.

I’ve changed my review. I thought about deleting it and posting a whole new review, but then I decided to keep it so TGC’s intentions to make AGK functional on Linux would be documented in the comments. If you would like to see the old review, so you’ll have some context if you read the comments, click here .

Okay, I’ve got better things to do with my time now that AGK on Linux has notably improved, and 2 lengthy reviews is 2 too many, so let’s get down to brass tacks.

  • Already numerous suggestions implemented in build 0.99142 - triple jump, jump variation

settings, player friction physics settings, and more..

  • The bug fixes are coming quickly, within days.

  • First roadmap for suggested features tackles roughly 25 features - all planned for introduction by end of next week. Progress is moving quickly and game is being well stress tested.

I have purchase PlataGo! recently and I am really happy about what it has to offer. Its an early access game / engine so I am aware that they are still bugs and even some basic things to add. However I value a few things in this early state:

  • Responsive developer, the software is often updated and the dev is on the forums help and answering questions

  • There is a lot of stuff added already. There are a very large number of possible elements to add to your platforming game for which you can customize many parameters. This, together with the different graphics packs (you can add your own or download more from the workshop) ensures that you can make your game unique

SHAKESPEARE? More like THIRSTspeare, amirite?

SHAKESPEARE? More like THIRSTspeare, amirite?

You know the drill. It’s a dating sim. But wait: not just any dating sim! One (or more) of your crushes like dating sims, and you, a humble programmer, have decided that is what you will make IN ORDER TO WIN THEIR HEART.

  • Create a cast

  • Write your dating sim over five acts

  • Use various skills such as actually talking to your crush to figure out what they like, and then put that in the game!

  • Navigate the new world as an independent developer!

Good luck! You’ll need it! Unless you’ve already played this game and have memorized what to do!

Slot Factory Create and Play - Magic Brewery

Slot Factory Create and Play - Magic Brewery

This is a pretty awesome concept, but poorly executed in my opinion. While you can build your own slot machine, you can not save machines that you build. The game saves one incident, and has no way to build others without destroying the one incident saved in the game. For that major issue, I can’t recommend this game for those who want to build their own machines.

Otherwise, I consider the graphics to be very good, the pictures you program into it spin smoothly, and its a lot of fun building your own slot –- UNTIL — you realize you can never save the creation with the idea to build others without losing the previous creation.
