BRAIN / OUT

BRAIN / OUT

For several weeks, I’ve thought long and hard about how I feel about the game. Yes, it’s fun; that’s clear to see how many hours I’ve invested into this game. Yes, I’ve made quite a few friends from the community. But honestly, that’s not enough to cover up just how toxic the community is. Very often, you will run into whiners who complain about you using a sniper rifle, using grenades or using anything. Other times, you will run into people backcap using drills (which makes blocks that you can use for walls/stairs), people who spawn-camp you, people who just sit on their ass with a sniper, waiting for kills even on Domination mode (Capture the point). You will be judged on what gun you use. If you use an AA12, you’re cancer. If you use a gun that requires microtransactions, you’ll eventually run into someone who’ll call you a pay-to-win fucktard. I’m not innocent of that and it’s everywhere. I’ve seen high-level players picking on lower levels and calling them “noobs” when they can’t fight back. Honestly, it’s gotten to the point where I can’t even enjoy the game and every night, I just leave and stew in frustration. This is coming from a player whose devoted hundreds of hours and money and has reached Lv 68. I’m considering un-installing this game.

After 75 hours put into this game, I feel like it’s time to give credit where credit is due.

Pros:

  • Free to play

  • Unique (not many other games like this out there. Shame.)

  • Replayable

  • Rewarding progression

  • Nice art-style

  • Variety in playstyles and loadouts

  • Very well balanced

  • NO pay to win*

  • Great community (both in the game and on Discord [has a decent playerbase, but could be larger])

  • Fluid gameplay

  • Has map editor

  • New Free Play mode is a solid way of incorporating the popular battle royale genre

Deepworld

Deepworld

Wall of text - TL;DR at the bottom

I would strongly recommend Deepworld to anyone who is a fan of the sandbox genre, and to anyone who likes steampunk, and to anyone in general. It’s quirky artstyle and unique gameplay make it one of a kind in the sandbox genre

Whilst it may not have some of the features that other sandboxes have, Deepworld has its own unique gameplay, and has come a huge distance since I first started playing in early 2013. The game is still evolving, and its development heavily influenced by player suggestions.

116 Hours played, but returned to this a few times to see what was happening.

116 of wonderful hours of nostalgia and building. I was ecstatic when I first played this on the Ipad, but then disappointed when Android didn’t get it later. Even after all this time I still loved this game, maybe in a more bitter sweet sense.

Overall Gameplay:

It runs like this, you first start out in the tutorial learning the mechanics: mining, flying, crafting, leveling items, etc. You are then opened into the server worlds with varying level designs that come with their own unique characteristics and items. Certain islands required you to prep certain gear like the desert needing you to have water on you. Your main goal in the beginning is to mainly grind exp from the mobs so you can level up your crafting skills. The more crafting skills you have the more you can use the resources you’ve acquired to actually build something worthwhile.

Himno

Himno

Another free game I enjoyed so much that I purchased the paid component.

Gameplay is pretty standard platformer fare. Wall jumps, air dashes, ledge hangs. Himno is billed as a relaxing platformer, but there were moments where I uttered the most profane of oaths. The controls take a little getting used to, and even after having spent a few hours playing, I was still plummeting to my watery grave. For the most part it is a fun and peaceful distraction.

No enemies, but the developer is working on a sequel that promises combat, loot drops, crafting and general roguelite attributes. I have wishlisted and followed.

Himno is a well-designed, free-to-play, casual platformer without combat that has an internal level generation system that gives the player an infinite number of levels. There’s not too much in the way of objectives when it comes to this game, as all you do is jump and dash, wall-grab, slide, and jump dash some more. You can look at the 11 very doable Steam achievements as your goal. (Took me about 2.5 hours to do everything necessary to get them.)

METAL SLUG DEFENSE

METAL SLUG DEFENSE

Okay, let me put this straight right from the beginning: this is a p2w game. Don’t listen to the couch badasses who say you don’t need dlc chars (because: 1) if you don’t have them, forget about pvp, if you are into that, 2) at certain point difficulty spikes up and it’s impossible to get anywhere without using items (from daily rewards/drops/whatever) if you haven’t bought the extra guys). How much full dlc bundle cost? Fifteen bucks. Is it worth paying this much if you can buy MS1,2,3,X with the same amount of money? Definitely not. Although devs seem to understand how much they f’d up and (temporarily) reduced bundle’s cost to 1$ for everything. Is it worth it now? Hell yes! It’s surprisingly fun, now that you actually do something (just don’t use more than 1~2 of those characters at once, they’re all game breaking, especially when used at once). If you want an analogy for the game, look at FF: All the Bravest - pretty much the same consept: a non-canon mash-up of all characters from all worlds and timelines engaging in battle-royale, forgetting about their former allegiances and vendettas. Just pure chaos and ability to make the most improbable teams with M.Army, Pt.Army, R.Army, Mars People, all the neutral monsters and bosses from all previous games - what not to love?

ok, this is my review.

GAMEPLAY STUFF:

  • is a castle defend kind of game, stop bitching about it.

-the game took me 45 hours to finish in about 2 weeks.

-there is not a single “paywall” or “paytowin” stage, you can beat every stage without a dime.

-the DLC units are VERY EXPENSIVE, but aren’t needed. you can S rank almost every stage anyways.

  • the medal system is almost worthless, you dont have enough things to spend points into.

  • best option is to buy limit removals and re-try some annoying missions.

Stupid game. It did had potential but stupid decisions hold it back.

100% pay or grind/waste your time to win. Not worth it because of that.

Edit: lol, if I change to not recommending it supposedly all my ratings will change. Even though I can completely change the text. But I DON’T recommend the game as is. I recommended it early on because it had interesting game play and early on progress is fast, however the game-play is totally unfair and require way too much grinding relative what you get back and the whole concept is unfair so … There’s better competitive games out there. This is more like a brag-show for those who have got the best gear and they will get even more of it because of that.. Yet another problem with the competitive game is that since it have so few players I assume you may end up with others at a different rank and maybe some in the higher ranks play together which mean they get to play with good people whereas the chance may be lower for you if you are playing alone.

Great coop game to play with my son. One problem is the lack of levels to play. I guess they try to compensate that with making the last panet impossible to beat, but trying impossible missions is getting boring after a while too. It would be no problem since there is a multiplayer part, where you can compete against other players or team of players. But it’s very hard to find people playing, and without a full stack of people the game is not starting. Another problem is that the server seems to have problems, more times the game just quits in the middle of the fight because of server problems.

I’ll ask you three simple questions, if you say yes to any, you will love this game.

  1. Are you willing to have to pay to get anywhere in a Free-to-Play game?

  2. Are you a fan of Pay-to-Win games?

  3. Do you want to be constantly curb stomped by some guy who has all the upgrades in the game while only being lvl 1 while he is lvl 1-60?

Also, this game series, it went downhill fast, don’t trust the kongregate version of this either, it’s just worse. At best you could play this on steam and Kong/other sites that have it and grind your own characters up by your self, and the more you can run at once, the easier it’d be for you to get anywhere without putting a dime into this game.

Back in 2011 or 2012 i loved to play flash games, i still play a bit and most i played got to be a huge success. I stayed hours and hours on the Kongregate website playing lots of those games, and then i found this. So this game was great, the older tdp games were also pretty good also. This was one game that you really could stay for a while playing, but not anymore. Finally got to have those chances to see it on steam and play it, and i got back to kongregate to play the game but this game has gotten very wrong. First off, the game is now full of hackers. Second, it’s completely pay2win, trust me! I played lots of pay2win games and they are horrible (EXAMPLE: Uberstrike), so you start off with crappy weapons and you have to buy high priced weapons to be too good in the game and sadly you can even pay real money if you want that amazing shiny gun and waste your time at killing some low level players who dont even know how to play. Third, the leveling system is pretty bad, its funny because you have to kill one by one to have like 1 XP, at this moment im stuck at level 7. Anyways, this is not a good game to give a try nowadays. For the game to be released on steam it’s already being terrible, i can be playing it now and im stuck at the synchronizing screen. Also, they might be faking this whole art like for example the steam picture and the amazing looking pictures, it doesnt fit at all at a flash game with a side scrolling gameplay. I miss the older multiplayer flash games, i still play Transformice though :D. But this game? Nah, you get sick of it easily.

This is a game where you are a Kirby who brutally murders other Kirbies to death with Hammers, Guns, Grenade Launchers, Lasers and even Katanas.

This is one of those games which is super easy to understand, yet is very hard to master as I am constantly learning new tricks, maneuvers and ways to play.

Pros:

  • Runs well on lower end PC’s

  • Runs god damn gloriously on my computer, at its worst I get 500 fps… So you will have no problems running it.

  • Cute art style and characters.

  • Fun to play.

Absolutely one of the most interesting games I’ve played this year. Super accessible and interesting, really cool and intuitive level and item design, and it feels really smooth to play. Definitely one of the most fun platformers I’ve played that I can just kick back with some music to and burn time with.

tough but fair, very much the dark souls of window-washing simulators

This friendly art style and tone disguise how frantic this game gets, especially when the light starts fading and you’re not sure how many floors are left. Once you get better you lock into a rhythm that’s really satisfying, like the best small speed-precision games. The upgrades are helpful and add a nice sense of variety and progression, but honing your ability is still the core.

I enjoyed it, fun game and it’s free

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

Free for everyone at the time of review.

Hardware: Win 10x64, 3570k mildly OC, GTX 1070, 16 GB, SSD.

Super laggy on my system; took me a full 30 minutes to complete a game advertised as 5-10 minutes. I see the system specs state “Windows 7”; I’m guessing this is either a Win 10 issue (some games lag badly in 8 / 10 that run fine in 7) or possibly the 10xx series video card.

I recommend taking a very brief glance at the videos before playing to see how fast the game is supposed to move. If the game is going to lag for you, it will start at the opening credits, which take so long to change screens (tapping an arrow key helps) that it feels like the game is locked up. Don’t press ESC; that instantly closes the game.

‘The hardest tumble a man can make is to fall over his own bluff’’ - Ambrose Bierce

James Cox has adapted, as part of his ‘100 games in 5 years’ project, the timeless classic short story titled An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge written by Ambrose Bierce in 1890. It has seen many variations since its inception ranging from short story to full novel inspirations, radio screenplays including a Twilight Zone broadcast, TV drama/movies and even music videos including Bon Jovi’s song Dyin' ain’t much of a livin'.
