Rivals of Aether

The best platform figther in the business next only to Melee. Crazy movement and mechanics with a low enough skill floor for newcomers and an insane skill ceilling that seems to only get higher the further the meta goes on.

This is probably one of my favorite Smash clones out of all of them for now. Not only is the game play, the crossovers, and content, but for the encouragement for workshop support. Modding is one of the main reasons why people even play SSB Brawl still, and for good reason. More content, unexpected characters to play as, and more variety.

Ever since workshop has released during beta and since the making of this review, 5000+ creations ranging from new characters, stages, and more have been released, slowly and surely improving as time progresses. Not only that, but workshop is very optimized for categorizing different characters per series or creator and how it loads them up to not overfill the game.

SAMURAI GUNN IS A LOCAL MULTIPLAYER GAME

–————————————————-

With this in mind, it’s a frenetic combat game which is quick to learn but takes a long time to master. The controls are very simple but also have a lot a slight complexities which make matches against friends feels absolutely epic. It’s hands down the most competive and entertaining local multiplayer game I’ve enjoyed with my housemates. If you like Smash Bros, Towerfall, hell even mario kart, you’ll enjoy playing this with your mates.

Amazing game. Spent hours and hours and hours playing this with people. It’s probably one of the easiest pickup-‘n-play fighting games on Windows and really gets everyone going. I definitely think this was my game of 2013. I’ve spent far more time playing it with guests than any other game I own since I bought it on Christmas.

Because there’s absolutely no documentation, there’s a lot of learning in terms of moves and rules. For instance, if you press your sword and jump and a direction at the same time, you do a mightier jump in that direction than normal. Also, you’re limited to 3 bullets a life (gets rid of bullet sniping or camping), and you can hold down to play dead (you’ll die in water if you do this). There are a bunch of stages all with their own little intricacies. If there’s any game I’d recommend for party play on Steam, this is it.

This game is somewhat of a double-edged sword.

If you have a friend (or enemy) who is in the room with you, this game is great. Otherwise, you probably shouldn’t get it.

The game plays like an elaborate dance; two players fighting for the honour of being consumed by the titular serpent- the Nidhogg. The controls are simple: one button jabs your sword, one button makes you jump. The real beauty is how the mechanics blend together. Swords can be moved up and down to reach a jumping or ducking enemy. Swords at the same height will clash, and can block the opposing player’s attacks. Swords can also be knocked out of a players hand by some particularly crafty swordplay. Jousting with your sword fully raised throws your sword through the air, which is hard to dodge, but leaves you without your best weapon. Thrusting in midair results in a divekick, a techniquie used to relieve the enemy of their weapon (that is, if you don’t impale yourself on their weapon first).
