UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH Exe:Late

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH Exe:Late

As a veteran fighting game player, I can honestly say this is one of the most refreshing, enjoyable fighters in recent years. Not only does it sport a lovely art style, soundtrack and character styles, but it has a very down to earth system that both new and old players alike can enjoy.

The common complaint I hear about fighting games aray in all shapes and sizes, but the one that honestly strikes me the most is how complicated it is to control and the overwhelming amount of information spewed at the player when getting into the genre. The beauty of Under Night is within its simplicity and overall capacity to handle even the newest of newcomers and the most hardcore of masters. Its control scheme is easy to pick up and begin making your own cool looking combos with ease, but it also allows those who are willing to put in the practice pull off long winded, high damaging strings.

Few fighting games have encaptivated me more than Under Nigth In-Birth. I’ve been playing fighting games for my entire life, starting at the age of 4 with Super Smash Brothers: Melee. And after fourteen years of growing to appreciate the complexities of other fighting games outside of the SB lineup such as Soul Caliber, Street Fighter and Blazblue, I came across Under Night In-Birth after it was suggested to my by an over-zealous friend. At that point I already had a basic understanding of how 2D fighting games worked. I could block low on my wake-up and had mastered all of the basic execution necessary to get me started. (Quarter circles, DP motions, that sort of thing). At first glance I expected it to be just another airdasher to add to the pile, primarily due to the anime artstyle and the fact that I had never seen it played at any major tournaments. It all just appeared to be so generic, with it’s anime intro and hit or miss character designs that I felt could be interchanged with other designs of the same archtype. Due to this heavy bias I had already developed before I even got to the start menu, you can imagine my surprize when I went into training mode and found out that I could not instant air dash like in Guilty Gear or Blazblue. It was at this moment that I knew that Under Night would be different from anything I had played before.

Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel

Very awesome fighting game.

It’s a cross-over fighting game, but I was able to enjoy it with no knowledge of most characters when I first started.

It’s an anime fighter, as one could tell from the anime artstyle. Thus, you will encounter some mechanics from similar games such as air-dashes, a focus on long and flashy combos, burst and roman cancel systems, etc.

Like other fighters of this subgenre, normals are split into three buttons: A, B, and C, representing Light, Medium, and Heavy attacks. This game also include additional buttons D and E for even slower and stronger normals, as well as a universal dash-cancelling system.

When I was spending a year away from my regular school at my local community college, I always hung out in a room on campus where there were guys playing YuGiOh, Vanguard, emulators via a Nintendo Wii, and one guy always playing various fighting games.

There were 3 I remember the most, Tekken 6, BlazBlue (Don’t remember which one though), and this game. I played it with him a few times, liked what I saw, but I couldn’t get my hands on it, lack of a Playstation to put the disc into and all that. So, when I woke up to see that this game got released on steam and I had a coupon given to me because of some cross-promotion with Skullgirls (another phenomenal fighter), I spent little time adding the money to my steam wallet to pick this one up.

If you want to get into fighting games, BBTAG is a good game to start with, combos aren’t too hard and not too many system mechanics to remember. As my first real fighting game experience I’ll vouch for this aspect until I die.

The fact most characters are viable and useful and of course from the 4(soon to be 5) franchises who bring all their personalities and simplified play styles make for a very addicting, energized and fast paced fighter.

My favourite aspect is the fact that if you work on a team enough, you can make any team work.

BBxTagBattle is one of the best Anime Fighters for Fighting Game Newcomers

Overall, if you aren’t put off by the anime-aesthetic and you aren’t looking for the “hardcore experience” of Guilty Gear or og Blazblue, but you still want a game that is highly competitive and challenging, then this is one of the best games to pick up.

The biggest downside is the subpar PC port that Arcsys refuses to fix. The biggest upside is the very entartaining gameplay.

cons:

  • Doesn’t have thousands of players like DBFZ, MK11, T7 or SFV

Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!!

Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!!

This game is quick to dismiss for its price tag and its initial presentation of anime-heavy content but it’s actually fun to pick up as a fighting game and let’s be honest we could all use some extra cuteness brighten a bad day.

-PROS-

Mechanics are what you will enjoy here because everyone is capable of dashing/canceling very easily. It’s not as “on-point” demanding like in Guilty Gear or others that require (Roman) canceling to be done only with certain moves with very specific frames of attack.

Pretty great fighter, although it will take some time to get used to it. If you can put aside the theme (take my word for it, it’s tolerable in game), you are in for a treat.

There are three main reasons the game sticks out as a 2D fighter:

  • Homing button

You can use it to jet yourself towards the opponent, delay your attack, fly around projectiles, extend your combo, dodge attacks. No other fighter allows you to be this mobile in the air. It’s something that you will keep finding ways to exploit, it’s pretty great.

BlazBlue Centralfiction

BlazBlue Centralfiction

I was actually planning to do this after I complete arcade mode with all the characters but I probably won’t even be doing that anytime soon so I might as well review this game now. BlazBlue has done a lot for me throughout the 2 years that I have been playing the series and I hope others will be able to experience something similar to what I did.

I’ll point this out now so that it’s clear: BlazBlue isn’t for absolutely everyone. I’ll just lay out the points that I think define the game.

Thanks ASW/H2 for the great port.

Pros:

  • Latest BB available on consoles, now on PC. for cheap. (BBCF is still only on JPN arcades atm)

  • Online mode works. Yes, a working online mode. In 2016. Isn’t that amazing?

  • One of the best, if not the best, netcode.

  • DirectInput Support.

  • Single player content. TONS of them. (Arcade, Story mode, Challenge, Abyss, Score Attack, Unlimited Mars, Challenge, Training, an extra story mode, and a couple of stuff for newcomers)

  • Tutorial will show you the ropes and Challenge mode can make you master some complex combos.

Ever since the final game in the series CentralFiction pissed me off to a full degree, I’ve pretty much boycotted the franchise.

But I figured that’s not really fair on this game, considering how much of an advancement it is.

You can now temporarily power up your character in the midst of a fight by pressing all four attack buttons. Each character powers up differently. Ragna absorbs more health with his drive attacks, Makoto’s punches will constantly be at full power and Hazama conjures up that goddamn barrier that drove me insane in the previous game.

You get an album during the purchase, and apparently it comes along with a free game.

Which is also packed with:

  • Flashy, stylish and gorgeous character, all packed with different weaknesses and strenght to suit your gameplan, provided you have one. If not, well, might aswell try out other characters to goof around with.

  • Plays the Album during the gameplay to rock along while you fight. All characters comes along with thier own themed soundtracks, pretty swell to listen to, and goes amazingly as you brawl through the mayhem.

MELTY BLOOD: TYPE LUMINA

MELTY BLOOD: TYPE LUMINA

as a person who has lots of sex all the time, i can say that this game is 100% accurate to having sex with sexy women. like i do. everyday. this game did not make me horny however. i am not gay. i just have too much sex with real women to spend more than 15 minutes in this game. on the other hand i would recommend this game to people who do not have sex (unlike me because i have lots of sex with women a lot) as there is a naked woman in it and she is naked. she kinda looks like one of my many girlfriends who i have sex with a lot. i have lots of sex. i also an very handsome and women ALWAYS want to have sex with me because i am very muscular and handsome and very good at video games. all my girlfriends say im very good at sex and playing video games and being handsome. one of my girlfriends asked me to have sex with her but i told her i was playing a sex game instead so she started crying and became a lesbian and killed herself because i did not have sex with her. i have sex with women. not men. i am not gay. i am very cool and handsome so girls always have sex with me because i am very cool and sexy. my penis is very big. all my girlfriends like my penis because it is very big and i am very good at sex with my women. every woman ive had sex with is very sexy and so am i. i have lots of sex. i am also very handsome and sexy and i have lots of sex.

Melty Blood: Type Lumina is an excellent first fighting game for anyone looking to learn the basics without being overwhelmed, but it’s also an enjoyable game for fighting game veterans. Though the base roster is a bit limited given the price tag, the mechanics, art, animations, and general gameplay are all top-notch. Beginners can get their feet wet with auto-combos, and then gradually increase the sophistication of their gameplay by using more difficult combos and taking advantage of the many enjoyable game mechanics like Heat and Moon Drive. Most importantly, the rollback netcode makes it easy to find matches against people with good connections even if nobody nearby plays the game.

I have collected all of the trading cards, made a badge, have over a day played, and beaten the game on all dificulties. It is time for a review.

I personally love this game. Saki is my favorite character. Do I recommend this game? Yes, but under certain circumstances. First, let’s dive into the true pros and cons of this game. [READ EVERYTHING, INCLUDING MULTIPLAYER]

Pros:

  • Decent fighting system

  • The game runs perfectly fine (Even with WINE)

  • I got it for $1.50 or something like that on Amazon

Well, what can you expect? It’s just another fighting game.

Aside from it being a 2v2 Assist fighting game, the art/graphics in this game and fighting style does make it stand out compared to the other games. Who doesn’t like girls fighting against one another in a struggle for glory? While the game itself offers very little, the actual fighting portion is very enjoyable, but maybe too difficult. Mashing buttons as a beginner, or performing combos as an experienced verteran, this game is worth playing a few times times over.
