Sonic The Hedgehog

Sonic The Hedgehog

I had a good time, received this from Sega as it’s Sonic Mania delay apology.

-It’s a good game, it’s not the best, it’s far too easy for experienced players, i mean, i took me a few hours max to finish this with all the 6 Chaos Emeralds.

-The soundtrack still one of my favourites, being Marble Zone, Labyrinth, Scrap Brain and Final Zone the ones that i enjoy the most.

-Gameplay it’s okay, you can do things the fast way or the “i’m afraid to lose a life so i will run slowly”.

Level desing is amazing for the time when this was released.

Old Classic From The Past

Majority of the people are probably going to buy this game only for sake of nostalgia purposes. Its rather cheap game so why not really, while i do not think its best of the old sonic games its still decent title and rather revolutionary when it comes to whole gaming industry.

Positives

  • Iconic Soundtrack

  • Great choice for speedrunners

  • Controller & Keyboard support and works well with both choices

We wanted the best, you know the rest.

A Contra look-alike, that does not stand to its predecessor. But is it THAT bad? Let’s find out! The game greets you with a nice soundrack and pretty good 8-bit graphics. Unfortunately the gameplay is ruined by bad controls especially in terms of jumping. And when you can’t land on a platform becouse of fucked up controls - you know that this game has an issue. A prefect run can be ruined by a single jump and then it’s back to the beggining or nearest check point (THANKS GOD FOR THAT). Also this game has a TIMER. And when such slow-paste game makes you rush the level becouse of the mistakes you made before - it doesnt’t help the situation at all. At least it has decent multiplayer.

Rather than improving upon Contra / Probotector-games due better tech nowadays, this game just feels cumbersome (I really don’t have more fitting word here).

Main reason why I don’t recommend buying this game due how blatantly unfair this game is.

Note, this doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be able to beat this game. But it is still still unfair.

  • First of, and the majour flaw: The checkpoint-system is for the most part pointless / not worth it. In fact, it is just better to restart the the whole stage most of the times since they’re really short.

Commander Keen

I love this game but wasn’t planning to review it. However, after seeing the E3 Trailer it inspired me to sit down and write a review about what makes the series great. Now other reviewers have pointed out that this is missing two games from the series; namely Keen Dreams and Aliens Ate my Babysitter. These are missing because the rights to these two games are owned by other companies not interested in selling them; but the games you do get are amazing.

Keen 1; Marooned on Mars was my first platformer. It starts off simple but gradually ramps up the difficulty. My four year old son loves this game; and he can complete most parts (still needs dad’s help for the big jumps and for killing the Vorticons (Kangaroos he calls them). As far as level design it has the most thought put into it and has many little tips and tricks.

NOTE: This is not the “complete” CK collection. It’s missing CK 6, and from what I understand, it’s because ID software lost the rights to publish it. Also the games run very slow on full screen and while they run fine when windowed, it’s far to small then. This seems to be the case since steam uses an out dated dosbox(0.70 I think). You can update the dosbox but you need to go to the community guides. I didn’t like the hassle, so I played these games outside of steam. All these things are a very resonable deal breaker. However, my review will be on the games themselves.

I really love this collection of Contra games. You get 16 total Contra games, including the superior Famicom version of the original Contra. You also get the European version of Contra III and Contra: Hard Corps. Some people may complain that this collection has games that repeat, and though it does, each version of the games are different. The one game that really stands out to me is with the original North American version of Contra vs the Japanese version of it on the Famicom. With the Famicom version of this game, there are no framerate issues, you get cut-scenes, an actual story, background animations, better sound, as well as a map of the locations that you visit, among other things. The European versions of Contra III and Contra: Hard Corps offer an option for running them in 60HZ for better compatibility with North American TV sets. The only differences with the European versions of Contra vs the North American versions that I can see is with their titles, origin story, and some character models.

Earthworm Jim

Earthworm Jim

As a Doug TenNapel fan, I felt obligated to aquire this game eventually. Until the day this review was writen, I’ve never played an Earthworm Jim game and I haven’t sat down to a full run of the cartoon (At least not yet), but for years, Jim here has been a major curiosity to me. It wasn’t until recently when I finally decided to get the game. The game itself is great once you find a comfortable enough configuration of the keyboard. The only real nitpick I have with it is that there’s no full screen feature! Other than that, the choice is yours if you want to listen to the Negative side of the reviews. I didn’t, and if I DID, I wouldn’t be here leaving this review, now would I? I may be years late to the party for Earthworm Jim Mania (Much like I was for Sam & Max Mania), but I would sooner spend my entire fortune on a laboratory in the wilderness, swap hands with a demon and call a giant space eel to Earth before I let another year go by without adding him to my growing list of fandoms!

Earthworm Jim Review:

I’ll first of all start by saying this is the MSDOS version so it runs on DOSBOX and I can’t find any source ports for it.

I hate how Steam shows the screenshots because the screenshots seem to have been taken using the Mega Drive/Genesis release because in the DOS version the picture of the gun on the ammo count is different from the one in the screenshots and they shown the Intestinal Distress level which isn’t in the DOS version.

But overall I call this version Average it is a good version but if you are an Earthworm Jim Newbie I suggest getting the Sega Mega CD/Sega CD or Windows 95 versions.

Enter The Echinada

One of the better Sonic games out there, as many would consider perhaps the best (of the retro era). Compared to previous two sonic games on steam this one has much more playability since it has more stages than first two games that can be completed in 3-5h easily, this one has pretty good stage design while maybe not best OST out of the three first sonic games.

Real player with 1.5 hrs in game

According to the official story, Sonic 3 was meant to include the “& Knuckles” content from the beginning, but it was cut due to time constraints. Sonic 3 was pushed out as the “vanilla” package, with the “& Knuckles” expansion pack (lock-on cartridge) coming out eight months later. I personally think the “& Knuckles” content ends up detracting from the core Sonic 3 experience, and would have been fine if it never saw the light of day. “& Knuckles” added the Mushroom Hill zones onwards, this is where the game starts to drag the most and see quality loss in level design in my opinion. If they really needed to have the “& Knuckles” content added to complete the package, it would have been a better experience start-to-finish if they had removed the Sandolopis zone, which is the lowest quality zone of the “& Knuckles” campaign.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Great game.

Gameplay it’s expected from a classic Sonic game, fast speeds, great level design again. Way better than Sonic 1 and a bunch of steps back from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sonic this time has the spindash, a pretty useful ability that can help you to get in higher grounds if used correctly. I love the difficulty of this game, starts easy, and gets more harder and difficult in terms of levels. Be careful, maybe you’ll find a level that was made by Satan himself cof Metropolis cof and some really hard bosses if this is your first time cof Death Egg Robot cof.

Sonic Returns, this time with a Friend

For those who are looking to buy some of the older Sonic games, i suggest checking Sonic 2 out, its rather a huge improvement than its predecessor “Sonic 1” for example you can play split screen co-op in Sonic 2 with your friend and also they have added spinball technique among cool 2.5D Stages

The Level design and soundtrack in general are very strong compared to sonic 1 and thats something i want to give kudos to sega for. While the game isn’t super long (Probably 1.5 - 4.0h depending how good you are) it still offers replay ability via Co-op or just speed-running the stages or trying to get higher scores.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

Free for everyone at the time of review.

Hardware: Win 10x64, 3570k mildly OC, GTX 1070, 16 GB, SSD.

Super laggy on my system; took me a full 30 minutes to complete a game advertised as 5-10 minutes. I see the system specs state “Windows 7”; I’m guessing this is either a Win 10 issue (some games lag badly in 8 / 10 that run fine in 7) or possibly the 10xx series video card.

I recommend taking a very brief glance at the videos before playing to see how fast the game is supposed to move. If the game is going to lag for you, it will start at the opening credits, which take so long to change screens (tapping an arrow key helps) that it feels like the game is locked up. Don’t press ESC; that instantly closes the game.

‘The hardest tumble a man can make is to fall over his own bluff’' - Ambrose Bierce

James Cox has adapted, as part of his ‘100 games in 5 years’ project, the timeless classic short story titled An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge written by Ambrose Bierce in 1890. It has seen many variations since its inception ranging from short story to full novel inspirations, radio screenplays including a Twilight Zone broadcast, TV drama/movies and even music videos including Bon Jovi’s song Dyin' ain’t much of a livin'.

ARCADE GAME SERIES: DIG DUG

ARCADE GAME SERIES: DIG DUG

While many ports of this game suffer from processor speeds that differ from the original (NES port in particular. nearly all online emulators use the NES version). smaller screen size(Gameboy and GBA) or poor graphics(Mac/commodore/Atari ect.) This port does not have any of these problems. It plays exactly like the original arcade cabinet. So if It doesn’t feel right this is probably the reason.

Some may find backgrounds annoying but I personally don’t mind.

If the price seems a little steep don’t worry there is quality here. Most free ports use the NES version and it’s one of the worst ports of this game. Your money will be well spent.

Hello Everyone,

Looking back fondly on my youth, I decided to play one of the earlies titles in my memory. That title is one of Namco’s biggest Digging Juggernaut’s Dig Dug from the Bandai Namco Arcade Game Series. With our introductions out of the way let’s start this party.

Arcade Game Series: Dig Dug is a Steam adaptation of the original arcade cabinet of Dig Dug that was released by Namco in 1982. For those of you unfamiliar with this franchise, Dig Dug is a 2D style digging simulator where the players goal is to clear a series of levels with the highest scores that they can possibly get. In order to make score, players have to destroy enemy’s, collect hidden vegetables/fruit that appear on levels, or simply dig thought the bricks that is on the various stages.

Crystal Caves

Crystal Caves

Crystal Caves is a 1991 DOS platformer made by Apogee. It features EGA graphics and only PC Speaker sounds.

The game is divided in 3 episodes, the first one being shareware. There’s not a huge difference between the episodes. They feature pretty much the same gameplay and graphics with slight differences. The difficulty increases with every episode.

In every level you have to collect every crystal in order to leave. This forces you to explore the entire level and overcome most of the challenges in it. It never feels tedious because the levels are fun and not too long. The challenges are fair and the controls are tight (for the time at least).

General:

Crystal Caves is a puzzle platformer game about Mylo Steamwitz trying out various getting-rich schemes for which he needs crystals. The game is split between 3 episodes, each having 16 levels to finish. In order to finish the level you need to collect all the crystals first.

Gameplay consists of various enemies you can blast off with your rocket pistol and some traps and puzzles. Even though the goal of the game is quite simple you may find the game quite difficult for you can run out of ammo, destroy wrong glass block which you needed to jump on, shoot at the air pump, let monsters overrun you… yes, the caves are a dangerous place!
