ThrustLander

ThrustLander

I really love Thrustlander. Originally it was a launch title for the much vaunted new Atari VCS Linux Super Console that came out last year. I have to say as soon as I saw it, I wanted it. Though there was nothing else on the VCS for me to buy so I forgot about that idea. Then I noticed it was getting a PC release. I immediately put it in my wishlist. So I am really happy that today I get to play it.

Well I have been playing it for months actually. I was one of the select few who got to play it early. Below is my review of a truly great game. Where other modern retro games fail this one has succeeded.

This is a great game, some real retro goodness. It brings back memories of Lunar Lander, Thrust, and Oids. While simple in nature, it gets quite hard later on. The graphics are excellent, the little touches like the landing gear extracting while refueling are top notch. The controls are fluid and responsive, I’m using an xbox one controller for it, and the game is quite fun. If you’re a fan of retro shooters, get this game.

The Rule of Land: Pioneers

The Rule of Land: Pioneers

it’s aight, pretty addictive.

needs a light polish, some spelling checking

on screen text gets a bit annoying after some time

“Press [esc] to cancel this operation”

“No Bullets”

I hate having to press M1 for every action,

Mining 40 rock is tedious.

loses difficulty fast.

I gets very boring after all other survivors are dead.

Getting to 200 days is mostly a chore

edit:

4-11-2020

I just found the “continues mining” option. the game is much better now.

XD

This ended up being a lot more fun than I figured.

I was worried that having the game play limited to just a few locations would make it repetitive but it actually wasn’t.

The only thing I disliked was that the HUD wasn’t explained very well but it is a brand new game so take it with a grain of salt.

Overall I found it to be a medium paced game that was thoroughly enjoyable. I look forward to watching it develop more over time.

The puzzle and gameplay aspect of the game is pretty good though the visuals is rather lacking, which may be part of the game’s aesthetic. The gameplay is what matters most though, which is a nice defense game where you need to place certain defensive mechanism in order to prevent an enemy from reaching the end of the level. There are a lot of levels which ramps up nicely and gets you to think. There are also various tools you use like mines and cannons. Other aspects also show up such as change in gravity from time to time which changes the direction the enemy moves, so that would be needed to be factored in when strategising and placing your defense. Overall, it is a good puzzle game, though with nicer visuals, would be great.

Kilta

Kilta

It’s a single player auto-battler with RPG, strategy, and roguelike elements. It’s an ambitious project that combines several of the most rewarding elements from each genre. Currently the game is in early access with a typical “run” taking 45 minutes - 1 hour upon successful completion.

The development team is very responsive on Steam and their Discord and has already released several patches since the game was launched last week. They are also working on making the game accessible and fully playable for the visually impaired, which I think deserves a positive recommendation all on its own.

Universal Enemies

Universal Enemies

Universal Enemies is a depth-scrolling action shooting game that supports a variety of play styles: alone, with the CPU, or with friends. Each stage can be played in a short period of time, so you can conquer it little by little in your free time. Once a stage has been cleared, you can play it again and again by selecting the stage. There are also stages with bosses and mini-games. Please enjoy the story with the cute monsters.

Main features

  • Deep scrolling: Move forward to the back of the screen and defeat the monsters coming at you from the front!

  • Story: The story of the heroes' organization and the hostile organization that uses the monsters.

  • Diverse stages: A variety of locations on land, sea, and in the air, and a variety of monsters await you.

  • Short play time: Each stage is short, so you can play a little at a time in your spare time.

  • Cooperative play: You can play locally with up to four players, or team up with the CPU by yourself.

  • Mini-games: Shoot, infiltrate, and race your way through the game! Local multiplayer support.

  • Split screen: The infiltration and racing mini-games are split-screen and each can be moved as desired.

  • Retro style: Switch the screen to retro style.

Head 2 Head

I can’t stop playing this game. After the update that included the head case and rolling for heads I’ve been addicted. Picked the game up just for the style but I love the feel of this game and can’t wait to see future updates. The games combo system is really open ended, basically letting you do anything you try. It’s easy to play but so far it seems really deep too. Has parries like 3rd strike but the game doesn’t require special move motions. Don’t know where it going or how big it will get but I’m really enjoying what’s here. Good music too. Please put in a music player so I can listen to the tracks from options screen or extras menu or something.

Also this game is really fun so you should buy it. Combos feel really good and the game allows for lots of creativity. The music is also great especially once you get farther into survival mode.

Epidemyc

Epidemyc

This is a strategy tower defense game, you must protect seven rows against monsters by putting soldiers in each row. The player must choose between buying defensive structures, attack soldiers, or mining. As the game progresses, special and aid units are unlocked, also the enemies are upgraded in their variety. It is a very entertaining game where you do not pay to win, it does not require internet, it is not too long (infinite), it is complete and contains unlockable elements.

History: A war between the north and south zones forced all retired soldiers to return to service, Colonel Steve among them. Steve has a special mission within his own territory, and this is to recover the containers from laboratory 3. This would be a simple mission if it weren’t for the fact that he must confront the biological weapons that the enemy used in the city and the scarce resources assigned to him. Will he be able to overcome all obstacles? It depends on you.

Diggles: The Myth of Fenris

Diggles: The Myth of Fenris

Very surprised Diggles/Wiggles has appeared on Steam, but VERY happy it did!

This is an unique game; nothing really compares to it then (20 years ago), and since then no game has been published (to my knowledge) that comes even close to it. So i almost immediatly bought it (again).

Didnt play Wiggles for years as the original sadly wasnt compatible with ‘newer’ Windows-version. (Could play the official Demo a bit longer though.)

Although graphics is a bit outdated and gameplay is quite slow, the game concept is so good, it was and still is the best game i ever played.

WTF!?! Who’s feet do I have to kiss for finally bringing this game to Steam!! If you ever played and enjoyed, Oxygen not Included, and the new early access game, Hammerington, then you will like this game as well. I even purchased those aforementioned games in the hopes to fill the hole this game left in me decades ago. While a bit dated on graphics (released in 2002), the game still has its same charm and is still very playable. By the end of the game, your dwarves will be riding around on hover boards, and brandishing light sabers. How can you go wrong with that? Thank you

Pedro’s Adventures in Spanish [Learn Spanish]

Pedro’s Adventures in Spanish [Learn Spanish]

Very simple, suitable for learning Spanish in a fun way; the graphics are in 2D but detailed enough so that you can see the details well.

The game has a plot that you have to follow, you play the young Pedro, the story starts with a beautiful princess who is kidnapped, but who took her? and where did it go?

You have to help Pedro to get to the Castle to find the princess and bring her back home.

There is no translation, but only the Spanish language, there is a tutorial that helps you at the beginning, it is quite easy to understand because we can associate the words with the objects we see or the actions we have to perform.

Hola soy Pedro.

I started this game knowing not a single word of Spanish but after persisting I was gradually able to work out a lot of the key words. You can just click around and try and do the puzzles without trying to figure out what people are telling you but I soon got stuck with this approach. Spending a bit of time in the world you will find obvious clues that people tell you. Sometimes they just outright tell you what to do which you can miss if you are not carefully listening. Music in the game is really relaxing and reminds me of Activate Jetpack cross with a JRPG.
