Pixel Pileup Party

Pixel Pileup Party

It’s Saturday, 1992. Probably late evening, perhaps 6 or so. You are a little kid, sitting on your bed, wrapped in a blanket with your “Game Kid” handheld device (not backlit) and play your favorite games while your mother brings you some hot cocoa. You don’t know it yet but this is the best life will ever be.

This feeling, the feeling of playing those handheld games back in the day, this is what Pixel Pileup Party is all about. This game collection includes four new “Game Kid” styled games in one package, so that you can feel like a child again. Unless of course that kid never was you, in that case you’ll encounter four great games styled after a 90s retro device. One way or the other, you’ll get some awesome games is what I’m saying.

About the games:

Chibi Ninja-Kun

The ancient scrolls of the Ninja’s way have been stolen and it is up to you to get them back. Fight your way through dangerous enemies, defeat tough bosses and try not to die out there.

Old school retro platforming action awaits in this tough as nails adventure. Are you Ninja enough to survive?

Donion VS Bad Hombres

Donald the orange onion is furious. Bad Hombres are infiltrating his beautiful wall (the best wall there ever is, so good, winning) thinking that, because he wants them to pay for it, it belongs to them. Foolish vegetables. SAD!

Help Donion get rid of the bad fruit by doing what Donald does best: Bumbling into them and tripping over himself. But beware: Some hombres are strong, yo!

The King Man is at it again - but this time for the first time! Again! How exciting! Puzzling! Retroing! Fun for the whole family, as long as you are alone, because this game is single player only!

Puzzle KING MAN? YES! The only game that has ever truly been and shall forever be 100% apolitical!

eXtreme Rider RETRO

Every ten years, a competition is held by the planetary government to find the best speedcycle rider on the planet. Many riders from all around the globe participate to find out who is the most extreme rider of them all.

It’s not a question if you’ll die. It’s about how far you’ll get before the inevitable happens!

Arbitrary list of features in no particular order:

  • Collecting 4 different 8-Bit Retro Handheld styled games

  • Match-3, platformer, endless runner and metroidvania in one package

  • Modern features like colors and game saves (yes, really)

  • 4 shades of green

  • Chiptunes. Who doesn’t love chiptunes

  • Each game has its own shades of green for some reason

  • Unique gameplay experiences for every game

  • All games have hidden graphic modes you can unlock in case yo don’t like green that much

  • eXtreme Rider RETRO has online highscores

Controller Information:

Due to limitations with the engine, some controllers, for example 8bitdo gamepads, may not work properly. There is, unfortunately, nothing I can do about that. Should you have any trouble with your gamepad, maybe try another gamepad or use the keyboard. I apologize for the inconvenience.

The Big Con

The Big Con

The game has a lot going for it, it’s designed with optional content in mind, the locations are fun to explore, the aesthetic is very captivating, the soundtrack constantly changes to match the environment, and it has funny characters that create a grounded, but enjoyable narrative. I think the story had a good pace to it, if you take into consideration all of the things that can grab your attention, they managed to keep it together very well. You can casually complete the game around 5 to 7 hours, there are many optional achievements and cosmetic trinkets, although it would be nice to have the ability to replay specific chapters. Having played the game only once, I am not sure how much impact the narrative choices actually have, the only thing I can confirm is that certain quests have more than one soluton. It’s not a difficult game in terms of puzzles and mechanics, there is usually a place to get hints, and sometimes the game offers you a way to skip a puzzle with a payment. As for the ‘thief’ gameplay, there is not much to it, it’s just a simple timing event with little to no punishment for the failure - I guess it does not make for a deep con game, if you were expecting that.

Absolutely charming and filled with character. I don’t normally gravitate toward things for nostalgia but this game captures the 90s feel so well I can’t help but grin like an idiot while playing. The art style reminds me of so many cartoons and sitcoms from the era, complete with (optional) laugh track. The music is fantastic throughout. The dialogue has an endearing sense of humor. The areas are fun to explore and puzzles fun to solve. And the game, at least as I played it, feels strangely and incredibly wholesome given it’s a game about stealing.

Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake

I must say, I like this a lot. It has one of the best scenes I ever saw in an fps creator game. I really appreciate the effort the developer has put into this! The Levels are looking great and the game got me good on some spots lol… I was actually scared. The game could also use some more ambient music tho, it would thicken the atmosphere even more!

Didnt play through yet, because I got stuck, but I will try again very soon.

Great Job Dev!

Emerald Lake is the best overall FPSC game I have ever seen.

It manages to include dynamic and interactive environments on a scale never before seen in an FPSC game within the dire limitations of the engine. Its visually extremely well crafted and manages to keep you interested with enough variation on the “find the key” mechanic and enough well made scripted encounters to fill its run time. If you enjoy these hobbyist horror adventure games, this one is certainly among the better ones. For an FPSC game, this is just legendary.

I expected NOTHING from this game & got EVERYTHING. It controls fairly well, has nice backgrounds & is never unfair. Don’t let the 2 ( soon to be 3 ) user reviews scare you…

Warning: might be influenced by nostalgia

I’m really happy to have found this little gem on steam :)

I’ve lost my original CD over 10 years ago and never could get hold of a copy ever since

RoboRumble is a nice little strategy game that’s tough as nails and doesn’t hold your hand.

It’s difficulty can be quite overwhelming at first, if you aren’t prepared for the challenge.

Every one of the 31 missions of the solo campaign is kind of a puzzle on it’s own, figuring out a working strategy may take some time, but is all the more rewarding after all!

At it’s core the game is kind of simple, you have a handful of propulsion types and maybe 8 guns (and that’s only during the endgame, when everything is researched). In 2017 some free-to-play smartphone apps have more variety ;). But the game gives you interesting missions to crack and it’s all about those “aha! I think I know how to win this one!” moments. There is a bit of odd character to this one - you are trying to win a government bid and your co-workers are a curious bunch, not to mention your competitor who might be playing dirty…or not, you are never quite sure.

Adventures of Chris

Adventures of Chris

Adventures of Chris

Adventures of Chris is a 1990s inspired platforming adventure with great humor, a awesome soundtrack and amazing artwork. While it draws a lot of inspiration from the classics, it manages to do its own thing with style.

What might look like a simple platformer at first glance will soon prove to be a hard but fair gaming experience depending on your difficulty settings and will give you a storyline that is easy to love and dream oneself into.

You start off with a fun intro, followed by a helpful tutorial that both teaches you the controls and explain the story further.

I discovered this game randomly on YouTube, and I really do hope more people find it.

On the face of it, it looks like a simple platformer, with a gimmick of a portly protagonist, and I was a bit worried at first that this would just pick on that element of him. And, well, it does. But it does it in a way that allows the eponymous Chris to rise above it (pun intended), overcoming his own insecurities to become a hero that those around him didn’t think he could be. And the platforming is anything but simple.

Intriguing and effective at the best of times, Dom Rusalok has the potential to be a very enjoyable experience for the right person - so long as a few bumps in the road can be overlooked regarding the gameplay.

All in all, I can recommend this.

It is unabashedly a nostalgia porn for anyone growing up in Russia in the 90s. The dialogues are believable, the situations - understandable, the otherwise purposeless close ups of items most of us had or at least often saw tickle the nostalgia bone.

The atmosphere of a nice urban legend carries this pretty far.

The gameplay is very much assessible and fun, think The Cat Lady.

At some point things start getting ridiculous, and personally I don’t appreciate the direction it leads the story to. Not even sure I understood the ending, and as such, it didn’t leave any emotional impact on me. Thinking back to it, I can see it explained in two different ways, and would consider neither fitting or good. Maybe it’s on me and the game is deeper than I think, but personally I detest purposeful ambiguity for the sake of it.

Double Memory

Double Memory

It’s a well made implementation of the classic Memory concept. While there are not many levels, they are still a nice challenge and training. The achievements can easily be finished in less than an hour.

The game is surely worth its current price.

Really like to see an Indie developer react to reviews and bring out two patches based on them within one week of release.

Well not much I can say about this game

No + and - below just notable things

-Completed it in 15 minutes with ALL achievements

-21 level (3-4-5-6-7-8-9) different cards on the table)

-Very annoying star shower when you correctly pick 2 cards

-Best price for such a game is 1$ so I can say that this is a value for money game

-Steam achievements - EASY +1 perfect game

-No cards

-Screenshot feature doesn’t work

Yes there are some easy to make steam achievements, the developer just forgot to put that tag on a steam store page.

Hero Hours Contract

Hero Hours Contract

I had fun playing this game. Just be aware that there are quite a few puzzles in here that are only solvable by using your character’s powers correctly. If you don’t understand how your characters powers' work by the time the tutorial ends, I would advise doing it over again because its important.

I mean, it is a simple quick and dirty strategy. Certainly has been a bit of fun for me- for totally unbiased reasons that have nothing to do whatsoever with the fact that this game was a Kickstarter and I am in it.

In all honesty, I do wish it had done a bit more interesting things with the progression- had a couple more music tracks- but the game itself does what it sets out to do and does it well enough. If I was to add something, it’d be some form of progression in the form of buying “conditions” as well as time off and pay. Unions not only improve pay and give people time off, but they also fight for safer and better conditions. By doing that you could slowly implement an increasingly powerful set of weapons and abilities.
