Visually, WR95 is somewhat similar to Virtua Racing Deluxe on 32X. I wouldn’t say it plays anywhere near as well as that game, but the driving mechanics are still decent. Collision penalties are the biggest issue right now, but the developer has promised to improve that aspect of the game in a later update. All-in-all, it’s a nice little throwback arcade racer with a very palatable price tag.

Update: Collision penalties have been reduced. No more spinning out upon any contact whatsoever.

Petal Crash

Petal Crash

(I backed this game on Kickstarter, so I got early access to it and beta tested it)

Most times I try a new puzzle game I end up bouncing off fairly quickly, but I managed to get a good hundred hours out of Petal Crash before moving on. As I tested the game and provided feedback on its design, I also thought about why I enjoyed it so much. Well…

The Gameplay

The first and most important thing is that the game’s content covers a wide range of intended skill levels. It was fun to be bad at petal crash, and even now that I’ve become extremely good at it I can still get some enjoyment out of the game’s hardest content. I ended up playing the game for a long time despite not having anyone to play with.

Petal Crash is one of the freshest new competitive puzzle games I’ve played in a long time, I simply cannot sing this game’s praises loudly enough! Mechanically it’s hard to compare it to any puzzle game I’ve played, and that’s a good thing as I love seeing unique new ideas. While the usual win condition of filling up your opponent’s board with garbage exists, it’s actually somewhat rare to win this way in my experience (but certainly not impossible, you will see it sometimes). Instead the alternative win condition you should be focusing on is the Battle Bar, a tug-of-war meter that pushes towards the opponent’s side every time you clear pieces, with the boundaries shrinking over time, until someone reaches the edge to lose a stock and the bar resets. Take three stocks from your opponent and you win the match.

so is this game a good game? hell yeah, this game is super fun. a competitive shmup with puzzle elements which works like a charm. its colourful too and has a nice aesthetic, and a good soundtrack. each character plays a bit differently too, different shot and movement speeds, of course each character has a different charge shot and bombs, standard affair with a shmup.

is this port a good port? absolutely not. this port has slow down and that ive never had happen when playing this on fightcade or supercade (when it was still around). like, the game does have slow down naturally here and there when theres a whole bunch of projectiles on screen, but with this port it happens a lot more frequently. it even happens when some characters throw out a bomb, especially with memory. and when i say slow down i mean the game chugs to like, 5 frames a second, basically unplayable until the slow down decides to stop. it’s also got a weird issue with sound where certain instuments will sometimes not sync up with the other ones.

This is one of the best versus shoot’em ups ever made.

However, what you get with this re-release is an easy to use ROM+emulator bundle with some additional features. The game ROM is not even openly accessible so you cannot use it with the emulator of your choice and are stuck with the given configuration options and the given launcher.

Besides, the Neo-geo original version is not the absolute best version of the game (the Saturn version had more content).

The additionnal features are a leaderboard, multiplayer and achievements, but every one of them is flawed:

This game has changed my life forever, I don’t think I could have made it through covid without this, I have about 350 hours on my alt account and am considered to be the best in the North American region, so you know you can trust me on this. The gameplay is exquisite and the controls are snappy and responsive. I honestly can’t play many other games after the experience of playing this, the rest of the games on steam just feel obsolete. The characters feel like people you have to know your whole life, it feels so real and immersive and you start to grow a connection with the characters as the story develops. Speaking of the story, it’s about 15 hours long and while ill try to not spoil anything in this review, I got to say the couples in this story are realistic and add some needed romance to this otherwise serious story. Speaking of the serious story, to relive the tone some in this game they added driver for some comedic relief. I like the character, tho he can be a bit much at times even crossing into being annoying sometimes. I think that his jokes mostly fit my comedic style, yet I think that they could have added more jokes for the older generations. The main character is mike and the story follows him as he goes against many formidable foes. I think the choice to make mike a silent protagonist was a brave one, and I think that the decision paid off. I also think that making Ethan a silent villain adds to his mystery and makes his betrayal more emotional as he doesn’t even need words to describe his secret hatred for you and the rest of you’re crew. Finally, I want to speak on the political commentary in this game. The statements on immigration are brave and what we need in this day and age. I also appreciate the message put into the game for young children. The message of “Don’t trust no hoes” is an important one to teach our younglings. In conclusion, this game has great gameplay, amazing controls, characters that feel real, and a story for the ages. 9.6/10 Best game of 2021.

I’m the kind of guy that’ll give every fighting game a shot. Went in with an open mind on this one, but it didn’t quite pan out.

For one thing, there’s no option to change control inputs, which is frustrating especially since one of the default gamepad inputs on 1P overlaps with an input on 2P. Since there’s no training mode, you have to go into versus 2P mode if you wish to lab/try things out, and as you can guess that can make things a chore. Even an option to just disable 2P inputs would’ve helped things a bit.

Breakers Collection

Breakers Collection

Breakers Collection features both of the original games (Breakers and Breakers Revenge) and a brand new content for the cult-classic among the fans of Fighting Games, that was first released in 1996 for the Neogeo and Arcades and after released with a sequel in 1998 with additional playable characters, balance adjustments and new gameplay elements.

Breakers Collection is a simple action-fighting game, with a rooster with many playable characters (10 in Breakers Revenge), that were all known by the fans from around the world.

The special actions are also similar to other fighting games from the same era, although the dashing and back-stepping techniques tend to differ between characters.

The collection version, the player will have more features and modes, like online versus mode - Rollback Netcode (GGPO) -, Art gallery and the most requested one, the training mode.

I’m a big fan of many of the 80’s era classics and I’ve sunk hours of my life playing the original Burger Time at this point, but I always wanted more stages to play. Now, this one was in the arcades and I never had the chance to try it, but honestly, it’s not really Burger Time, but something that uses the general aesthetics.

SBT is… it’s chaos. Ruthless, distracting, quarter munching chaos. Gone is the methodical charm of the original and planning out your paths. SBT just throws overwhelming numbers of very random enemies that don’t necessarily even follow the food theme (hammers, vultures, lighters… huh?) alongside a metric ton of annoying opponents that are food, but have a way of cheesing you to death, instead of punishing you for planning a path badly. They respawn rapidly, tend to out pace you easily, and they can even make it borderline impossible to get out of your spawning position. Some stages remind me more of zombie swarms than anything else.

Thief Town

Thief Town

Thief Town is a perfect example of a indie concept gone right. It is one of the funnest local multiplayer games for my PC. There are not that many, but Thief Town stands out. It becomes a real blast as you franticly find and kill your mates, and the other gamemodes are creative, and don’t dum-down the experience. As a nice fresh concept, it is only local multiplayer. I am fine with that, the four-kids-cramped-in-a-basement gaming sleepovers I have settle the need for others. Grab some friends, get some drinks, and start stabbing! Soundtrack not only fits, but is 8-bit dubstep. If you like getting your friends for monaco, or even a nintendo game like smash or mario party, you will LOVE this! I heard the app doesn’t work that well, but I have controllers.

This is godawfully bad and should be burned with fire. No, sorry. Fire is too good to deserve contact with this game, and frankly it’s done a lot for the human race.

It’s an 8-bit wanna be E.T. Atari cartridge ripoff. Except that the developer of E.T. had vision.

It’s 2016 and the developer thought it would be a good idea to try to recreate the early 1980’s level of video gaming. Realistically, nobody goes out and says, I want to do my job, but at a level that’s 36 years more terrible than the status quo. Apart from the developers of Thief Town!

Absolutely awesome game. Old school retro Golden Eye multiplayer inspired goodness, local splits screen up to 4 players, bot support, atmospheric music, cool guns, multiple modes to choose from. One of the best thing you can pop up at LAN party. I highly recommend it.
