Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake

I must say, I like this a lot. It has one of the best scenes I ever saw in an fps creator game. I really appreciate the effort the developer has put into this! The Levels are looking great and the game got me good on some spots lol… I was actually scared. The game could also use some more ambient music tho, it would thicken the atmosphere even more!

Didnt play through yet, because I got stuck, but I will try again very soon.

Great Job Dev!

Emerald Lake is the best overall FPSC game I have ever seen.

It manages to include dynamic and interactive environments on a scale never before seen in an FPSC game within the dire limitations of the engine. Its visually extremely well crafted and manages to keep you interested with enough variation on the “find the key” mechanic and enough well made scripted encounters to fill its run time. If you enjoy these hobbyist horror adventure games, this one is certainly among the better ones. For an FPSC game, this is just legendary.

I want to start this review off by saying I am biased to it. I used to play this all the time on the original Playstation and loved it. I do recommend the game, but I want to warn potential players that it is a difficult and frustrating experience. The game is not easy, and you will often find yourself aggravated.

You cannot use the arrow keys or WASD to move. You have to use the mouse. You click a spot on the screen with the left mouse button, and your character moves to it. Or you can click and hold it down to auto move. Your character will walk or run wherever your mouse icon is, though it’s not perfect and they’ll often stop if something is in the way.

The fact that you are here on this store page, reading this review, likely means that you played this game back in the day, are interested in getting back into it, and are maybe worried about things like compatibility.

While the game worked fine for me, I would still recommend playtesting it yourself immediately after buying to make sure it actually boots up and functions, as this is a game designed for a much older version of Windows, and IIRC there have been some threads in the forums about having difficulty running the game. It comes with the territory. I would also recommend against installing mods that scale up the game’s resolution beyond its original capabilities. As enticing as it is to play this boomer game in 1080p or 4K, I could not get it to work, and nearly bricked my copy in the process. So maybe don’t do that.

Actraiser Renaissance

First of all, this is a QUINTET remaster. The mere fact that this game exists is a tremendous blessing for a certain cult fanbase.

The obvious bias aside, is the game good?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH MORE

It’s obvious that a lot of faithful effort was put into remastering this game. From including Yuzo Koshiro’s amazing soundtrack and accompaniment to the astounding artwork given to the many characters, menus and intro cutscene. People put their sweat and tears into this, and it shows in that regard.

A great example on how to make a remake. Renaissance does an excellent job of bring the original SNES games action and town sim into a modern era with new graphics, classic and remixed soundtrack, and expanded story that makes you feel more immersed in what was a somewhat bare-bones world before.

The new artwork is great and the story telling is actually quite deep. Everything reads like a positive psalm with the writing really showing some great character development and overall storytelling. Which is good as all the new characters do little gameplay wise. The story is the only way you will interact and learn about the characters and their backstories.

Touhou 3D Dungeon

Touhou 3D Dungeon

A little rough around the edges but otherwise a very interesting and fun little game. You can tell this is a labor of love through the way the game plays. The dungeons are well thought out and aren’t repetitive in any sense. Frankly, I’ve loved my time playing this game and I think those who are interested in these kinds of games would love this game too.

The creator of the game also made the game engine from the ground up which I think adds to the game’s merit.

A neat short adventure game in a style similar to Legend of Zelda from a unique perspective switching between the 3 main Characters.

As seen in the Screenshots and Trailer the game is graphically somewhere around the PS1 era and got that clunky crusty visual style which has its own charm in my opinion.

I should say again the game is very short, my first playthrough took around 1.5 hours and I still have to do a second one at the time of writing this.

The controls arent very refined and sometimes some jumps can be a bit frustrating but overall I’d say if you want a short adventure and especially if youre already a touhou fan its probably worth picking up.

Avalon: Sacred Crusade

Avalon: Sacred Crusade

“Beware the schemes of mortal men. For all the shortness of their lives, they lust to leave their mark. Before this hubris, even the Gods can be tumbled.” - Merlin the Outcast

To some, Avalon is an idea, a myth, an ideal, perfection; it is a place outside of time or space, an eternal edifice. To others, it is home. The Avalonians share much with Humanity, but one cannot remain in Avalon for long without becoming something… else. Long ago, in the forgotten age of The Migration, the Covenant was formed: the bridges between realms would be closed.

Their greatest criminals, however, continued to be cast out forever to languish in the mundane realm. Some lived as Oracles, Saints, or Wizards. Others we remember in legends of darkness: Sorcerers, Shapeshifters, Blood-drinkers, scattered across time.

Now though, the realms grow close once again, the veil between them weakening by unknown machinations. The Grail has been stolen, and without it, evils long buried are rising in ever greater numbers. The call to battle has gone out for the first time in this age, and many have answered it. These new defenders of the ancient Covenant must not fail, for the fate of both realms now hangs in the balance.

A Blast From the Past

Return to an era before all stats were homogenized into just health and mana. Avalon: Sacred Crusade takes heavy inspiration from popular RPG titles of the 1990s and features rich character customization that allows you to select your character’s origin, attributes, spells, and equipment.

No easy recoveries or quick wins here. Deal with a classic death penalty system where you drop your items on the ground and need to retrieve them. Experience what it was truly like to play early MMORPGs and graphical MUDs.

You may choose to adventure alone, however, the game features a robust party system which allows up to six players to work together in the same group. For the best experience, bring your friends - or make new ones in the game!

An Authentic Retro Experience

Listen to classic 16-bit Sound Blaster effects while you slash away at pre-rendered 2D sprites. You can experience all of this without the usual hassle of running a retro game on a modern system. Avalon: Sacred Crusade will run on any DirectX 10 capable PC!

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.

|

Is this game a masterpiece? No, but it is a fine time-waster for anyone who likes the genre. It plays fast and satisfying, the visual presentation is good and magic spells and bossfights require a bit of thought during the mayhem.

It is a platformer on speed. You play a heroine with a long reaching sword which she can use very skilled (and fast), slicing through weak enemies like pudding while guitar riffs provide the musical background. There is no stamina bar, so you can slash as much as you want. You can also use a magic weapon (only one of the 20 that can be found can be equipped), as long as you still have magical energy (which regenerates over time). Killing enemies and destroying the picturesque environements (hanging corpses, gloomy lightsources) often yields you pickups. The sword can be used fast and has a far reach, so it is not too difficult to defeat your foes, also you can (double, later triple) jump rather far, which makes the platforming a joy. So, with a little bit of training, you slice through the levels quite fast - until you reach the boss at the end, where a little more concentration is necessary. With enough pickups, you can upgrade your heroine’s powers, when you die (you start with only one life but quite a few health points) you restart at the last checkpoint (without the upgrades). Game progress is saved when you complete one of the eight stages.

Fury Knight

Fury Knight

Fury Knight is an asset/template flip of a 2D platforming game made with a game making engine. They slapped some kind of zombie/knight tileset on the engine.

The game maker/engine they used is of deplorably low quality. Retro pixel “art” style, the laziest of all copouts for developers who lack the money/talent to do better. Locked controls, locked resolution. This bundle garbage really doesn’t belong on PC.

Lichenvale

Lichenvale

There are dreams and there are nightmares. There is death and there are swords and spells to stove it off. What will you do when dark specters come for you tonight? Players find themselves in the role of a young woman who is being trapped in her own nightmares. Can you find your way through the labyrinths of darkness, or will you be trapped forever?

Inspired by 90’s hits like Hexen and Quake, Lichenvale is a first person hack and slash offering: fast-paced melee action mixed with the tactical use of spells and dashing around your enemies. This singleplayer title will feature a story mod with up to 10 maps full of various progressively difficult mobs, regional and main bosses, as well as some light puzzling. Those seeking an adventure are awaited in the New Game+ mode.
