Kowi Ishto: Battle of Akonoli

*** RE-REVIEW UPDATE ON JULY 3, 2021 ***

The developer reached out to me via email and asked me to re-review this game after his updates and “big update 3.0”, so I decided to give his game another chance considering the number of updates this game has seen since my first review more than a year ago…

This video shows my reactions to the current state of this game on July 3rd of 2021:

In all honesty and good faith I cannot recommend this game, as I didn’t enjoy it at all, and I believe that even for a tenth of its price you could buy a better game.

If you want you can watch my first impression and some considerations regarding the game and the studio (one man team) in the following video.

I think everyone should also take into consideration the statement released by the developer on June 22nd, date that follows the production of my video, where I point out things that were then addressed by Cenokga in the following statement: https://cenokga.com/my-experience-after-first-game-release-a-letter-from-the-developer/

Putt-Putt® Saves The Zoo

Putt-Putt® Saves The Zoo

Probably the best action RPG FromSoftware has brought us from their sister studio Humongous Entertainment, Putt Putt Saves the Zoo has deep character customisation and equipment options to take you through an epic tale of romance, adventure, and bosses with a super subtle backstory provided through context clues and backdrop scenery. If you need a hint with the third boss,

! hit his right toenail with the secret weapon provided under the waterfall. . I’ve easily put 500 hours into this game, and feel as though anyone reading this review may be able to as well, as naturally you’ve probably heard of this game and are here specifically wondering if it’ll cater to your personal RPG needs.

I have a lot of trouble figuring out what to say here. How do you review Putt Putt Saves the Zoo? You might as well ask me to write a review of Citizen Kane. At a certain point, the cultural value of a creation rises above criticism. Sure, Putt Putt Saves the Zoo may have its flaws, but at its core it’s become so ingrained in the American zeitgeist that to critique it is as unpatriotic as pissing on the American flag. Instead, I want to offer a thoughtful and nuanced critique of the philosophy extolled in Putt Putt Saves the Zoo.

The Benza RPG

The Benza RPG

For fans of the television show, The Benza RPG is a dream come true. Literally every character in The Benza and Benza English can be found in the game.

The battle system reminds me of Final Fantasy 10 as you can switch characters in and out of combat if you have more than four. Each weapon has different skills attached to it which allows you to customize your team a bit. Party members each have their own set role in combat. Each character is really useful, and there is no character that I just left on the bench. My favorite part about this is that even characters not in combat gain experience. It was really fun that the main cast of the television show voiced their characters, but I wished they had subtitles. Maybe a future update?

A bit of backstory. The Benza is a Japanese web tv show about a couple guys wanting to replace their broken toilet seat and end up getting dragged into a crazy supernatural quest to save the world. The Benza RPG is a nice companion to the show, trapping the whole cast of characters in a video game universe. If you’re familiar with the show, the humor sticks, so I recommend watching a few episodes first. Otherwise, I don’t know if anything would make sense.

Pros

-surprisingly deep story

-witty dialogue

Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It’s Dark Outside

Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It’s Dark Outside

There are too many reasons why this game is THE BEST game that you could ever buy on steam.

There is so much that I can say about this game, but I will talk about the best aspects of the game.

The open world aspect of this game is incredible. From scene to scene, each area has something new to see and experience, from throwing pennies in a well to finding gold in the mines. It isn’t a straightforward gaming experience, you can take your time and not be bugged by AI characters constantly telling to you move on with the game.

Pajama Sam, a name that I have known for my entire life. I have played the series since the beginning purchasing all of them at my local Costco ever since I first opened this on christmas of 1997. I would leave our 90’s computer on all day and constantly go back and play Pajama Sam. I continually go back and replay this amazing game through all the years. I lost the disks of my Pajama Sam games so when I saw this on steam I had to buy it. Yes it is a children’s game but it will always be one of my favorite games of all time. If you haven’t played it I highly recommend it, whether it is for you or for a child. Every child should play this game.

Spy Fox in “Dry Cereal”

Spy Fox in “Dry Cereal”

SpyFox is bit of a cult classic to those that played H.E. games as a child back in the mid-late 90’s to early 2000’s for Wins 95, 98, and X (Vista and later requires a Emulator, which the steam releases provides).

Able to play this again was a huge nostalgia trip for me, and discovered a few gags I never saw before, somehow, or references I didn’t understand as a child. It has aged well, and is great for kids or anyone new to adventure games.

In this game, SpyFox has to stop a goat named William the Kid from ruining the dairy market by replacing cow milk with goat milk. You’re sent to a fictional greek island to met the rest of your team: Monkey Penny, Prof. Quack, and maybe a bug named Walter Wireless.

It’s hard to believe that this game is over twenty years old now. I played the demo of this game way back in the dayon one of the HE games we had, well that my little sister got for one Christmas. The demo introduced me to the world of Spy Fox and how to amke a good game for children, that isn’t cheesy and childish. I mostly grew up on the third game in the series, where that game had the demo of the second game included. Way back in 2009 several years after not having played the games because I was no longer a kid, I had a nasty cold, and for some reason thought of the Spy Fox games again, and looked up some Let’s Plays of the games on YouTube, and fell in love again. I managed to pick up the 2007 version of Dry Cereal from EB Games a couple of years ago. So for now I’ll just talk about the first game in the series; Spy Fox In Dry Cereal.

Commander Keen

Commander Keen

I love this game but wasn’t planning to review it. However, after seeing the E3 Trailer it inspired me to sit down and write a review about what makes the series great. Now other reviewers have pointed out that this is missing two games from the series; namely Keen Dreams and Aliens Ate my Babysitter. These are missing because the rights to these two games are owned by other companies not interested in selling them; but the games you do get are amazing.

Keen 1; Marooned on Mars was my first platformer. It starts off simple but gradually ramps up the difficulty. My four year old son loves this game; and he can complete most parts (still needs dad’s help for the big jumps and for killing the Vorticons (Kangaroos he calls them). As far as level design it has the most thought put into it and has many little tips and tricks.

NOTE: This is not the “complete” CK collection. It’s missing CK 6, and from what I understand, it’s because ID software lost the rights to publish it. Also the games run very slow on full screen and while they run fine when windowed, it’s far to small then. This seems to be the case since steam uses an out dated dosbox(0.70 I think). You can update the dosbox but you need to go to the community guides. I didn’t like the hassle, so I played these games outside of steam. All these things are a very resonable deal breaker. However, my review will be on the games themselves.

My first game played was Supaplex and I thought I’ll never ever play a clone of it with the same pleasure. But this is indeed very nice and it has unique complex levels.

Pro’s

  • I do like that I got to learn logic operators

  • I totally love the fox, super cute to look at

  • I enjoy the music

Con’s

  • More levels - like a free DLC would be nice

  • Preferable an editor - so I can make my own crazy levels

Keep it up!

Present for Manager is a simulation of a board game similar to Monopoly. It’s easy to learn. The AI is quite good, but I recommend local multiplayer for the true board game experience that tears families apart. ;D
